saw my the worst of the IR effect today when shooting under tungsten lighting. Will need to invest in some filters at some point... in the mean time, some shots from a series in progress....

Another way to help create the deep blacks of under-exposure in properly exposed shots is to create a curves layer, pick say linear contrast (to start), select soft light mode and the pull the opacity down to say 20-30% (a technique copied from Uwe S).

hmmm... camera is currently having a well derserved break... will check the serial later. I think i can just about live with the "side effects" at the moment. But from the sounds of it nigel, i'm going to need your help to sort out the warranty repair works. Just doing too much shooting at the moment to part company with the camera at the moment.

You have a good eye, enjoy the M8. I do think though you could have helped the girl with the 'blad in the third shot and offered to hold that reflector it's doing no good tucked under her arm.

it did occur to me to do that but i thought i'd stick to my rule of non-interference. Girl's got her heart in the right place (film vs digi), although i've never known anyone to shoot a hassy single handed 1/125 shutter speeds. My hand very never blocks of cement i guess...

In response to your original question: It is not normal for the M8, unless the original image was strongly underexposed and pushed at least two or three stops. In that case any digital camera would show such banding.

31035xx does this mean the camera will need to go off somewhere? I got this camera off nigel on this board who i think got it used from a dealer in manchester. Sounds like i'm probably the 3rd/4th guy using it.

I just got a M8 too and i love it so much. upgraded from a R-d1s~have no regret and ignorance to decide so long to get it~ I was using a Nikon D700 and then got a r-d1s 3 weeks before, since then, sold all my DSLR and very happy about the RF!

Nope - that is a second series camera. It is just underexposure in that case

I met a man once...
whatever you do with an m8, don't underexpose with it. Overexpose all you want (within reason) the m8 holds on to a surprisingly humongous amount of highlight detail which you can bring back in lightroom.
Shooting with the m8 reminds me alot of what my zone system instructor told me "...expose to get detail in the shadows and develop to get detail in the highlights, then when you go to print it you can do whatever you want with the image..." In other words, expose to get shadow detail, you can always drop the shadows into oblivion in post but you can't always bring shadow detail back.

jaapv, the shot in question was done in jpg with no post processing done. I've since noticed similar shots when shooting 640 and above. Its quite random and not always reproducible but its certainly not due to me taking an underexposed shot and lifting details in curves/levels mode. I have drafted an email to leica but was hoping for your opinion on whether this could be a sensor problem?

It can hardly be a sensor problem. If anything electronics, I would say Possibly the motherboard.
