Does anyone know if this is possible? I've seen indications that the F3 screens will fit an F2, but it's not clear if they'll fit the original F.

I'm thinking about getting some F3 screens (the ones I'm looking at are cheaper than the F model).

You are wise to use F3 screens on either a F or F2 because they are brighter. Both the original F and F2 utilize the same screens BTW. Recently I took an "E" screen from a F3 and mounted it into a F2 screen frame. WOW a lot brighter. All that is needed are the tiny screw drivers.

Now the difficulty is to compensate for the added light that will effect exposure. In my case it was moot since I use a DE-1 eye level prism with no metering.

Cal just summed it up!

The F3 screen is a good bit brighter than the F/F2 screens and you can put the F3 glass into the F/F2 frame by carefully undoing the screws in each one and then pressing out and replacing the screens.

Be careful not to separate the glass as it is in two parts, just hold it in a cloth, push it out and then put it straight into the other frame...

Watch out if you use a meter on your F/F2 though as the brighter screen will produce under exposures. If you use an eye level finder then you are fine!

Simon

Thanks both of you for the input. Luckily I won't need to compensate since I'm using the standard prism.

Ah, so you have to remove the actual glass from the F3 screen and put it into an F screen frame? I did not know that, just saved me some time....

Oh yes, you MUST remove the glass from the F3 frame and mount it in the F/F2 frame (once you have removed that glass also, obviously!).

Its not difficult, you need jewelers screwdrivers and try not to separate or touch the glass.

Exactly, very simple to perform, just watch out for those little screws. Considerably brighter and makes a good camera even better.

Recently I discovered Beattie Intenscreens but they are almost $200.00 new, but luckily I found a plain mat version at KEH for only $40.00. Even without any focus aids its great, but particularly wonderful with longer lenses.

Also bought a brand new Beattie with a split prism for my F3 (guess where the spare F3 screen came from for my F2). The split prism is kinda oversized and will not only make your VF'er brighter, with the huge split prism it kinda makes it like a rangefinder.

Hello all, if I may piggy back a little on this thread? Some bozo just sold me a C type screen on eBay that arrived today. It was sold a for the F3 and someone even wrote in black marker on the screen's plastic box "Type C for F3" but it turns out it's for the F not the F3 despite what the auction and plastic box says (and it's a little scratched too). Anyone know if the F screens can fit an F3? Only paid $1.25 plus a $4.95 shipping so not a huge deal but still....

I thought I had read this was possible but never had a true confirmation...
Good to know...!!!
Not that I'm looking...I bought a "J" screen for my F body and I like that...

If the F3 fits the F, then visa versa should work
