How easy is it to fix the timer on the GS?

Mine seemed to be working until after I installed a new pad. now it runs until it gets to the end but the the shutter never opens.
And even though the shutter never opens, somehow the film advance lever is engaged like it's ready for the next picture.

I replaced the pad from the top without taking apart the lens assembly.
I'm a little worried that my pad may be the wrong size. Could that affect the timer?

I would leave it alone and don't bother using timer, otherwise you are trying to fix a mechanical clock (timer), I've tried with my Petri's and never get them work (and destroyed the whole camera :p )! but again, you can always try and keep in mind that you might ruin the camera..

If you get it dissassembled to the point where you have access to the timer mechanism and you screw it up, the timer itself can be easily removed with no adverse effect on the rest of the shutter. The only interface between the two is a little arm that sticks out from the self timer that holds one of the arms of the shutter mechanism and keeps it from tripping until the timer times out and the arm moves out of the way. If you need to remove it, I can post a picture showing how to do it. Only one or two screws, depending on the model.
