i don't have a flash for the g1.
for still life/product shots i use old fashioned tungston bulbs and the on camera for some fill, at times.

Any of the Olympus flashguns work on the G1, the FL36, 36R, or FL50, 50R. They will tend to be more easily available and cheaper than the Panasonic versions. They are fully functional with the G1. The Metz 36 with Olympus mount also works, although this doesn't have a swivel head, only up and down.
I have an Olympus FL50 and an FL36, and the FL50 is a bit heavy for the G1, but the FL36 is perfectly balanced on the flash shoe.

Do all of the auto and TTL functions of the Olympus flash work on the G1?

Note the older FL40 and FL20 do not work on the G1, only the 50, 36 and 14.

I am also interested in an external flash for the G1.
I use the on camera for fill flash. Under bright day light, the slow sync speed of 1/160 is quite annoying, and the lens hood casts a shadow if the subject is close.
