Ok, I just did some experimenting and apparently it can! Only in the single AF mode, and it doesn't seem to work all that great…but it works. Interesting!
That's how the F4 works with the SB-24, the flash originally made for it. Continuous AF is impossible with the IR beam because the beam, which is not totally IR, would then be visible in the photos.
The SB-25 on either the F4 & F5 works the same way...it helps in low light situations...just make sure you have good batteries in the F4 or it's going to hunt...
It's kinda crazy how….well, I put 6 Energizer Ultimate Lithiums in the body about 4 years ago and the indicator still shows full power. I have used the camera quite a bit and it is impressive how the F4 is so economical.
