I've hardly ever used a flash but it's never too late to start.

Real Men Shoot Film.

Normally, I hate flash since it usually looks so unnatural. Done right, however, it can be used to make beautiful images. This one was made with a handheld Mamiya 645 Super, 80mm lens, and Tmax 400 with a flash bounced off the ceiling.
The photograph is a portrait of Don Goss, my high school photography teacher. I shot it in class during my senior year of high school, back in 1994. Mr. Goss encouraged me to go to art school; and he had a long list of former students who became successful professional artists and photographers, including Peter and David Turnley!
He taught at the same school for 56 years, retiring only because the school district decided to close the school, and he didn't want to teach anywhere else. Mr. Goss died last year a week before his 88th birthday. My mom and dad had him as a teacher in the late 1960s. The Turnleys were his students in the early 1970s. I was in the early 1990s.

Camera set to ambient light through a large window at left of camera, after an f/stop was determined by Sekonic flash metering. A Minolta 320x was used through an umbrella to the right of subject at 45 degrees. Mamiya Super 23:

I measured the ambient light outside and set camera to that setting then I checked the bounce flash off the ceiling to match the f stop on camera. Minolta 320x:

I have a Mju I (Olympus Stylus Infinity), they really figured that camera out. Its flash is the best of the subs-compacts. Great shot and story.

An oldie from about 1965; Leica IIIf with a AG-1 bulb. I've always used flash but to do it right you have to take your time, at least before pixel peeking. Now you shoot, check, and quickly change something.

I love using flash.
Unfortunately, I don’t do studio or controlled shoots anymore. I used to do headshots and portraits as a small side business.
But, I do like using it with small point and shoots and my iPhone. I do really love the pop art hard flash style though. I know it’s not everyone’s favorite.

Beautiful flash portrait; you did it so you aren't sure that it was a flash.
