flash problems with CLE

I got a CLE. It came with a flash. For me it was just a curiosity, since 99.9% of what i shoot doesn't require a flash.

But i wanted to know how it worked, and haven't figured out how to shoot flash with the CLE. The flash is functional, i tested it with its red back button, and it does fire. But no matter how hard i try to sync it with the camera (iso, shutter, aperture) i haven't been able to fire it while taking a photograph! I've always tried the flash with the camera empty, with no film.

What may i be doing wrong? Thanks.

With the CLE flash or PX flashes it should be as simple as leaving the camera on Auto and switching the flash on. When you do this does it indicate 1/60th of a second in the viewfinder? If not what shutter speed is it showing?
