Background: Geezer photographer (very lo-tech, btw) been out of the biz for 30+ years (old F frame Nikons back then:) Getting back into photography as a hobby - got my X100 a little over two weeks ago.

Problem: Yesterday I could not access the flash system via the command dial. Dial worked in all other major directions. Wasn't in silent, or burst or bracket modes. Cussing did nothing to solve the problem or make me feel better. Going through Reset DID work, but there was the added hassle of resetting values & settings. An hour later - same thing happened. When I went to look in the menu - the "flash" category was unavailabel - grayed out (or greyed out, depending on where you are from:) Nothing I found under Troubleshooting helped.

Any and all suggestion greatly appreciated

Are you sure that camera wasn't in silent mode. As far as I remember flash setting doesn't work when camera in the silent mode.

Nope - that's one of the first things I checked. That's what makes this so curious. And, as I'm about as far from a tech-savvy person as you can get (miss my old "lollipop" match-needle F bodies:) - I'm stuck using the troubleshooting portion of the manual and a few Internet lists to try and get things squared away.

It's strange that after I did the initial reset - it worked properly for an hour or so, and then revered to not allowing flash access?????

When I go out for another shooting session, I'll be sure to keep a "log" of all of the activities I do and see if that helps in tracking down the gremlin:)

If you are talking about the on camera flash, was the "external flash" setting in the menu on? You can't use the on camera flash while you have that setting on. I wish you could. It would come in handy especially since there is no pc port.
