Hi folks I just purchased this camera and I want to get a flash for it. I'm an available light photog and very ignorant of flash photography. This is the one camera I want to have a flash for, to take interior night time shots of people mostly.

I've done some googling but I figure the folks on here might be able to help me out with recommendations. I figure modern flashes are too bulky and expensive and have all kinds of features I can't use like TTL metering etc. I want a small unit although bounce might be nice. Something period would be fine, but also open to units that may have come along after this camera that would be appropriate and easy to find. Some way to control the flash power as it relates to camera shutter and aperture settings might be nice.

BTW the Minolta Hi-Matic 9 is a lot like a 7S but it does have some improvements like a hot shoe and the "Easy Flash" system which apparently is a guide number system where you make settings on the camera so the flash adjusts the aperture according to the focal distance right?

TIA - Colin

I don't know anything about the Hi-Matic 9, but if you want a good quality small and light flash I would recommend the Vivitar 2800-D. It has an adjustable head but not swivel. Two auto settings are available as well an non-adjustable manual. It isn't a monster power house but for indoor events that aren't 20 feet away it is fine. I can very easily bounce in a 8 foot ceiling room which I use a lot. It has a light that will tell you it is OK to shoot at the auto settings. I also with a leaf shutter camera (like I think the 9 is) do fill flash even on the brightest days. (Although you should use slow film for these bright days.)

This is a Digital test run for using my Olympus 35RC which I will take to Christmas.
