I can't imagine using it too often but I wanted to pick up a flash for my R-D1. Can anyone recommend one? I'm after nothing too fancy but something with a swivel head would be great...

Thanks in advance for any help!

I was thinking the same thing and realized I had an old sunpak 422d which seems to work well on my rd1.. do a quick search here before you buy, someone posted a link a while back to a site that lists flash voltages.. seems some old flashed may cause trouble with the rd1 and other electronic cameras.

If you can deal with compact, but no swivel, I highly recommend the Metz 34 CS2 digital. It can fit in a shirt pocket. It also should come with a bracket if you don't want to use the shoe, and can also be used as a slave. I can't say I use mine too often, since I prefer no flash. But if I have to carry it with me, it's no big deal.
(It is presently on sale at Robert White.)

Am I right (most likely not) to assume that any flash that uses batteries won't be a problem with the R-D1, in terms of this safe voltage issue?

No battery operation has no bearing on it. Some early flash guns like the Vivitar 283 can generate in excess of 500 volts at the snync terminal battery or not. Guide to voltages here: http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html.

Modern guns like the the Metz 34 mentioned are no problem. Epson do not state a maximum voltage but I would be careful about any with a trigger voltage of more than 25 volts without the Wein safe.

Hi, do you use Wein SafeSync with the flash?

No I don't- never had any problems.

You will need to experiment with different apertures to get a feeling for how it repsonds to fill flash, bounce flash etc.
