Flash

Gi if i am not wrong you only have the option of manual flash. you can refer to sean reid website for more detail on how to. Its paid subscription but it is worth the read.

Thanks for that - I assumed that would be the case. I'll take a look.

Does anyone else here use a flash with their R-D1? I even read some folk don't like to mount the flash on the hot shoe so close to the rangefinder adjustment screws... is that a genuine worry?

Manual flash only. I use a Metz TTL 48 for my Nikon, it works well, but demands a bit of thought since it doesn't have aperture manual, only power manual (i.e. 1/1, 1/2, 1/4... 1/128). I'd prefer an old fashioned manual flash. BUT, and its a BIG BUT. Make sure the flash has modern low trigger voltage. Old flashes with hi-voltage triggers may fry you camera electronics.

Personally I'm looking for a Nikon SB30.

A tip. The R-D1 forum has many pages, not just the newest three listed here. To find older posts (many concerning flash) perform a search once you've entered the R-D1 forum (search this forum option under the Forum tools button to the upper right).

After removing the hotshoe yesterday I can tell certainly not.
The hotshoe is screwed down by 4 very small screws on the top frame. The adjustment screws are reached through one of the holes and slots on it and they sit about 1 to 2 cm below it, there is no chance to touch the screws, even if you drop the camera down on the hotshoe I believe (the shock would kick the RF out of alignment in that latter case though 🙂 )

Thanks. Ideally I would like something compact with a swivel head so I can bounce the flash. I have seen an Olympus T32 which fits the bill - does that look right and can anyone suggest anything similar?

Cheers

We've discussed flash many times here already. You might wish to do a search on the forum. Here's my Nikon SD20. Inexpensive second hand. Works fine with the R-D1.

Looks as though the T32 fits the bill then - it's small, cheap, and can be angled upwards.

I have read through the other 'flash' threads (found 3...) and found them very helpful, but it's always interesting to see if anyone has anything else to add. Sorry if starting another thread has angered anyone...

Cheers
