Hello!

I have quite some 120-films laying around. To avoid Newton rings etc, I am searching for the Image Mechanics Fluid Mount for the Nikon Coolscan 8000/9000. I have the Nikon 9000 and scan fluid, but not a proper wet mount for the scanner.

Anyone having one/knowing about where to get one?

Thanks...

Hi Helge

The Image Mechanics trays are unfortunately rare as hen's teeth. I have one which I found by chance on eBay. I can't speak to the Scan Science kit, which I also looked at before finding the Image Mechanics tray. One thing though it may be that the tape is needed for that kit, but in my experience the liquid holds the transparent sheet, which goes on top of the film, in place very firmly. Btw, I use Kami fluid which evaporates very quickly after the transparent sheet is removed. And I don't use the "mylar" or other expensive plastic, rather I use simple Overhead film. Much cheaper and works just as well.

What the guys at Image Mechanics did was cannibalise other Coolscan trays and add a glass plate. But I think it should be possible to 3D print one these days.

If you like to go the DIY route by building one yourself I can email you pictures of mine. Happy to help you offline too, just PM me here or at LUF.

Best
Philip

Thanks folks!

I don't think I will pursue the 3D-print route - but I am certainly a buyer if someone would like to do this.

I have some Scan Science stuff for an Epson flatbed scanner; I will have a look at this see whether I can use/modify the flatbed-stuff for the Coolscan 9000. Should/could work, I guess.

I am - as everyone else - totally allergic to Newton rings...

I've had very good success with the Nikon Tray for the 9000 that comes with the Anti-Newton ring glass. It too might be difficult to find these days, but if you acquire one, they work very well, just make sure you keep it clean, as dust can be an issue.

Never done wet scanning, but another advantage to the Nikon Tray is that it works for scanning odd sized negatives and I've used to to scan 110, 127 and 2.25x3.25 negs.

Best,
-Tim

Thanks Tim.

I have the anti-Newton ring glass. Yes, it helps, but I get Newton rings on quite some scans nevertheless. So I guess I have to dive into wet scanning...
