Focotar-2 50mm questions - I've got one

Hi there,

My father recently found an old Leitz Focotar-2 50mm lens that he had saved years ago for the future. We know nothing about the lens, and strangely it's hard to find information on it (other than "it's good").

What's it worth? There's aren't any on eBay. Is there a market for it?

All we've got is the lens itself (it appears to be absolutely mint), and an attachment for filters (with 2 attachment screws at 180degrees from eachother).

Hi Noot,

The 50mm Leitz Focotar-2 is one of the best enlarging lenses ever made for enlarging 35mm film. Some people will say that it is THE best 50mm enlarging lens ever made. I have one one my Focomat 1c enlarger and it is extremely sharp.

The reason you aren't seeing any turn up on ebay is that they are relatively rare and people who own Focotar-2's and still do their own darkroom work are not about to get rid of their lenses.

I have seen them go for as much as $512.00 US on ebay and often for more than $350 when they are available. Of course prices for used enlarging lenses are not what they used to be, with so many people going digital and selling off their darkrooms. I have taken advantage of this situation to collect some really good German enlarging lenses for the formats I like to play with. If you are going to do your own darkroom work, I would suggest keeping it. If not, do some research on ebay by searching the completed listings for the Focotar-2.

There are people who want them, so you shouldn't have trouble getting a decent price for the lens if you decide to sell it.
