I cleaned up the threads my Leitz Elmar 5cm (black gunk of some sort) and it is now smoother than it was before but I was wondering if there is suppose to be any form of oil or grease to allow for a smooth focus? I wasn't sure if the black was just a bunch of dirt and dust or old grease/oil.

I cleaned the threads of my Elmar with Ronsonol fluid. Then added a BIT of lithium grease to the read. Used a toothpick to add just a bit of it and worked the focusing for a bit. Its smoother real smooth now.

Thank you for the reply. I will have to give this a try. I know Leica's are very particular and I didn't want to potentially ruin the lens.

I used a cotton swap with Ronsonol to clean the thread. Again, use just a bit of grease, you don't want to cover all the thread, just a bit, remember that once you work the focus, it will spread all over the threads.
