So I purchased an amazing copy of an s2 off eBay last week. Everything looked great except it had the squeaky focus. I did some digging and saw all the threads on how to service the helicoid and was planning to try to fix the issue this weekend.
Yesterday I visited a friend, parked my car with the windows open and the s2 sitting in the passenger seat. Went inside for a visit for an hour or 2 and when I came back I saw there had been some direct sun on the camera (lens cap was on). It was a nice day 80f/26c so not too hot. Was a tad worried but grabbed the camera and it was warm to the touch.
I started to inspect the camera a bit and when checking the focusing I noticed the squeaking was almost gone. While it was still warm I been doing full range actuations and after about 60 seconds the focus was smooth as butter. I only had 2 images left on the test roll so I burned em and cracked the body open for inspection and everything looked ok.
If you have this issue, I'm not saying to stick a heat gun on your RF but maybe there is something to reactivating the the 70 year old grease.
