follow my own advice

george,
at the risk of starting a war...your problem was in how you presented your argument.

right now my goal is tying to keep as many people satisfied as i can and by maybe adding some sections we could help foster the photo side of things.

as to the gallery, jorge would have to answer those questions. i believe most of the changes occurred because the site was so slow, but the bulk of the gallery problems happened with the last server move. it was never the same afterward.

gear and pics can live together just fine if the people who are interested in both treat the others with respect and understanding.

joe

Aw geez, joe, no war.

To me it's just ironic.

After that "incident" I decided to "postively channel" my energy by either initiating or posting to W/NW threads! 😀

Only dilemma now is my pics are back down in "the City" and I'm up here in "the country" on a night when everyone is hot to post pics! :bang:

you need one of those gizmos like on start trek that n house some pics for transport.

or maybe a laptop computer.

Oh goodness - you do not want to hear about what happened when I 'unhooked' my new laptop from its desktop docking station set up.

Let's just say that some new curse words were coined the evening I tried to reconnect" it after thinking it would be easy to remove it etc.

When you start hanging scanners, external HDs, CF interfaces, printers etc. off of your "laptop" it configures to them. So while it's easy to "unplug" and "disconnect" when you try to "reassemble" all heck breaks loose! I lost all kinds of connections that I had to "restore" including my optical mouse!

Try restoring a computer w/o a mouse that sits in a docking station that covers up the keyboard pad! 😱

I transport data back and forth. But now, with large pic files now am looking at new media solutions. Seems I now need to move about 300 Gigabytes and growing if I want access from here to down there! :bang:

How bout a "No kid gloves" photo-critique section? Civilized constructive comments on composition and technique always benefit me more than "I love your pretty picture".

FrankS had a list that would cover most photos well.

Roy

I kinda like the "honest-critique" concept but it makes me nervous. RFF is indeed a different kind of place but in other sites I've seen too much of a few "experts" who specialize in slicing others to ribbons. I get an odd kick though out of comments like "this element should have been placed further to the left"... fine for a table-top still-life, but next time out in a rural area I'd like that guy along and HE can move that barn 6 feet to the left so I can achieve the perfect composition!

I was thinking of suggesting a Bokeh discussion area but I'd have to duck and run, and besides I suppose it would lead right back to the hardware anyway... 😀

sounds like your next purchase is a USB drive. 🙂

Yeah - ANOTHER USB drive - at 400 GB to go with the current one!

A couple of years I used to "lug" a USB drive back and forth (I think it had about 1GB capacity).

Then I "got smart" and purchased some 2 and 3 gig CF's (much lighter!)

But, when you scan or shoot in RAW - you run through GB real fast! 🙁

So now I have 300GB of "images" sitting on a USB HD down "there" and I'm up "here" when everyone start posting pics!

No big deal - just a "fun" dilemma.... 😎

The gallery feature is not appropriate for discussions about photography, which is what Joe was suggesting we should try to promote.
The image I posted was just meant as an illustration for the particular theme I had in mind.
In my opinion the topics have to be quite specific and selective for any discussion to remain focused, constructive and inspirational.

Vincent

Ah I see - and I agree! Thanks for the explanation.

I think it would be a great idea then to create a "Making/taking photographs"-section with separate forums such as "Street & Urban Landscape", "Fashion", "Photojournalism", "People & Portraits", "Landscape & Scenery", etc.

I don't have a problem with the upload limitation. I don't take enough pictures worth uploading anyways 🙂

What I don't like is the lack of inline messages in threads where image links are not allowed.
Maybe it's just me, but following a W/NW thread where you have to leave the thread for each and any picture is not much fun.

To me, this is a place to talk about RF gear and to post photos taken with that gear. If the photos are "good" enough to grab someone's attention, they might leave a comment or two. What could be better than that?

Excellent ideas. I would also recommend a forum for discussing / recommending photography books and/or websites and blogs.

By books, I mean books of photos or monographs, rather than how-to books.

Whatever more sections more confusion... I only add for talk about authors and all the style, philosophy, character, aesthetic that can have in the Photography (with capital letters)

We should really take a look at the existing forum catagories. Lots of opportunity for rationalization there, I think. How badly would it mess things up if catagories were eliminated/consolidated. Would it be easy enough to switch them to a new catagory?

Frank,

Yes, the forum categories could certainly benefit from some Spring cleaning!

For example, there are five (count 'em) categories for different models of the Fuji G!!!

The Mamiya category is a "slacker" with only 2 choices!

We have one category called "Russian Made Cameras" and another labelled "Russian RF". 😕

Yes, if you go down the list - almost all the categories, many redundant - are "gear oriented".

Yes, then there is the Gallery, and W/NW. That's about it for showing pics. :bang:

Why don't we have categories for say:

35mm B&W
35mm Color/Colour
MF B&W
etc.

Or:
People/Street
Still Life
Sports
etc.

????? 😕
