For Mom :)...a Touch screen Compact with RAW capture.

I would value very much a recommendation from anyone who has one.

I love my mom and that she has always taken tons of family pictures.
With her and pop now retired I want her to have the best and easiest tool to continue to do so. These images are our inheritance is how I see it 🙂

I just sent her away with my Ricoh GR for a one week tour of Vancuver Island and The Sunshine coast.
I think it will go fine but she kept poking that LCD screen like it was her iPad. 😛
My mom is learning quickly how to edit using RAW and has a nice soft touch with the sliders.
She has my hand me down iMac and aperture so is well set to make the most of it.

RAW capture is key and essential . Easy touch screen to focus, expose, and control menus would be great. WIFI is not as important as we have finally understood how to connect cables and open image cature to create an offline BU file before importing into Aperture.

So far I tried giving her a Sony RX100 and Fuji X20. Not a fit!
The Ricoh GR just happens to be what I have on hand now but I know it will not stick (too wide).
I would really like to give her something she will use instead of the iPad mini.
She comes home with loads of images on that iPad that can not be adjusted for exposure or WB nor printed very large.
Once with RAW always with RAW. and that to me is great.

During the days of film she had a Yashica T4 and a Yashica T something zoom. Life was easier then. Just drop off at costco and get the prints later in the week.
Little Kodak instamatic for decades before that !
A lightweight zoom would be good. Nothing to super zoomy or clunky. (28-90 ish would be fine).
No brand loyalty on our side other than it is supported by iOs RAW converter (Covers most cameras at this point).

The recent m43 bodies and probably compact zooms too have touch screen functions. My bargain GX1 e.g. lets me delete shots etc. on the screen. But not like iPhone cameras where the screen does it all. However with a 20 1.7 lens and a little filial set-up for auto iso/wb parameters, she could set a GX1 to Intelligent Auto and get great shots /RAW every time. And delete the non greats on the touch screen.
 
The Olympus E-PM2 sounds ideal. Not too big, not too small, simple controls, touch screen, raw, etc. Excellent sensor and in-body image stabilization. If she ever wants it, it can also be fitted with a very high quality EVF.

It's currently available in a two-lens kit from getolympus.com for $399.

another option is the eos-m. to me it's touchscreen interface is much easier to see and more intuitive than the one on the olympus epl5, which i also use (the epl5 uses only a portion of its 16:9 lcd for liveview, which ends up being small). the eos m is pretty small with the 22mm pancake, though larger with the 18-55 kit lens. and of course it has an apsc sensor so IQ is quite good.

all that said, godfrey makes a good point about the oly having stablization, which is nice. i've also heard good things about the nikon v1, esp if fast AF is important. the AF on the eos m isn't great for shooting kids if that's a concern.
 
These are all very nice Cameras. I just watched a youtube review on the EPm2.
Looks great. One can choose the focus point and release shutter from the touch screen. This is exactly what I'm hoping to get for her.
Continuity between how one uses the iPhone and this iPad and that camera or some other touch thing.
Touch has become a wonderful point of acces for folks like my mother but... now it's the only method that is well ingrained and I won't try and push her away.😛

All that said... Can someone recommend a camera that is not interchangelable lens that does some of these things?
She will never change a lens so a short fixed zoom is great. Half way hoping the coming 1" sensor Fuji x30 is touch screen (but then also hoping not as I will want one and don't care for screen menus!)
I'm searching as well but as always very much value these experience shares as well as... these dialogs brings up yet un-thought questions. Thanks again!
 
it's not so small but the canon g1x is a fixed zoom, has raw, and touchscreen. i've never used it though, it's pretty pricey. but i expect it has the same UI as the eos m, and it has a big sensor (not quite apsc but slightly bigger than m43). i don't think there's a fixed lens m43 camera, but i've never really checked.

it's really too bad that none of the rx100s have touch screen, it's a great size as you know.
 
The Canon EOS M gets a bad rap. It's a nice little camera, takes sharp images, is easy to use, and is very cheap these days. Put it on your list.

They returned from the trip with the GR and heaps of great pics. She would easily take it I bet but... how good a son am I ?

I normally just crop in post. But i did setup one of the programmable functions so that I could get in camera crop when I was playing around, getting a feel for the camera.

A lot depends on how big u print and how picky u are. IMHO an 8x10 print is ok up to the 47 crop. 13x19 I would stop at 35 crop. Ymmv all over the place as they say.

It is rare that I actually use the gr at 28fov.

Interesting. I just use it native 18mm (28 equiv).
Can a person record DNG when shooting "crop" or is it only available for jpegs ?
 
I don't know..I never use audio recording features. I suspect it is a jpg only feature, but I am only guessing 🙁

I'm looking at the Panasonix LX100.
An m43 sensor in a Lumix body. It just looks too good to be true on paper.
Both of us have owned Lumix camera before with great success. This one looks like a winner.
Hope it's available before the Holidays.
