for the newbies

let's not get nasty about it now.

I'll be the first to admit most of the photos I post aren't contest quality. But I try to be a little selective. Vacation photo diaries belong in a blog. This is a classic example of why some members lobby for restrictions.

I have posted in favor of restrictions.

I figured satire might work where discussions about restrictions and polite recommendations had been ignored or overlooked.

And nope, I don't think my work is quite ready for awards.

Thank goodness no one has posted images of their spouse using the "John" (or a "loo" as our UK pals call them).

We also call them 'lavs', lavvies' or 'bogs'... as in:
'Phone! For you!'
'Tell 'em I'll call 'em back, I'm on the bog/lav/lavvy!'

😉

"John", "bathroom", "can", "restroom", "crapper" (the last name of the man who invented the flush toilet--English, I believe). I guess we've gone about as far OT as we can go🙂

Not sure if you were referring to me or not Bob, but I uploaded eight photos last night. Sorry if that was flooding the gallery, I just wanted to upload a few samples from my Fuji using different films.

I think that one problem with the gallery uploads is that if you let it go to your member gallery and select to copy the photo additional categories during the posting process, then the photo shows up in the recent photos twice, as well as being in your gallery twice. This happened to me on one photo last night which I promptly deleted and reposted.

The workaround I found is to upload everything into your member gallery, create a sub-album, edit the photo, and then change the photo category from "member gallery" to the album name you just created. This will prevent it from showing up twice in the recent posts view (and help keep your gallery organized 🙂).

Patience is a virtue?

By having an open gallery, there is no way your can set arbitrary requirements for the quality of work posted. One of you could start your own galleries and moderate it if you like, but I think that this is more of a "rangefinders are cool/look what I can do" type of gallery we have going on here.

There is also the possibility, as the galleries are free for all and uploads are unlimited, that some may use them as free unlimited online photo storage. As an alternative to pay storage like Photobucket etc. I have been browsing the albums and there are some with hundreds of photos in them. Why? I for one am not going to browse through hundreds of photos from a single member, I do not have the time or patience.
This may not be the case, but it is a possibility.

Nope, wasn't you. I saw your stuff last night and as I remember it didn't flood the gallery.

This morning the gallery was completey dominated by a single user. Not just 8 shots.

I am not calling for restrictions on quality. That would easily become fascistic. Also, the issue of quality is far too subjective. I merely want others, out of respect, to limit the number of uploads.

When the discussion began in another thread on the same topic I proposed a generous number, 7, in an equally generous time limitation, 12 hours.

Given the recommendations from the moderators, I have personally chosen to limit my uploads to 3 per day. Why? Out of respect to other members.

Look at earlier posts within this thread. I like seeing what everyone else is doing, their influences, their evolution as photographers, their humor, and even their families. This isn't as enjoyable when the recent uploads are overwhelmed by a single individual.

I hope this isn't taken as a rant. I'm just trying to make it plain.

I wouldnt mind a restriction, as long as there is still a cool place for me to have my photos seen.

Andy, if you look at the top posters you will see that most of their work is pretty consistent and that they have been here for a while. I think that most people that plan on really joining the community respect it. Although every once in a while you will get someone using this place as if its yahoo photos.

Some of the comments posted earlier today in this thread certainly sound like judgement calls on image quality and subject matter. Addressing the flooding-the-gallery issue is one thing, but deriding images and subject matter is something else entirely and very un-RFF like. I was personally offended by it and can't imagine how the member who posted those images must feel.

Where can us newbies find out how to post photos?

Where can us newbies find out how to post photos?

I might as well make my first post a good one! 8o) For those of us who are new, WHERE do we find out how to post photos? Does this require us to have a website or photosharing site?
Answers appreciated!

welcome rob!

to post a photo into a thread, go to the bottom of the page and look for the 'post reply' button, then hit it. at the bottom of the next page you will see a buttom that says 'manage attachments' hit that.
then hit browse and click on a photo on your fard drive.

you also have a gallery when you register here.
go to the top of the page, hit 'gallery' on that page, if you are logged in, you should see a few buttons on the top right of the page, hit upload and you're on your way.

Hello🙂

A little while ago I thought I would never say this: Please, please, PLEASE can we have a limit on the gallery uploads to something less than 26...something like 5 a day? I know it's not for them to even think about it at the moment, but it seems that a lot of new members just upload every picture they've ever taken (slight exaggeration 😀 ) the day they join us here.

I'm beginning to sound like a right old fart about this, so I won't be saying any more after this post (well at least till everyone forgets about it 😀)

Regards

Yep. The ones that make you go nuts are the ones that seem to upload everything on a roll--no selectivity whatsoever--like they are using the gallery as a storage site. Of course the ones doing that may never even look at the threads where they are being cussed and discussed.
