I haven't used either camera but from photos I have seen from both cameras the Ricoh GRD blows the Sigma away. I checked out the review PoPhoto did back in Feb. & the photos didn't impress me at all.
Joe, I agree with you 100% & I'll even up you one: Olympus OM SLR's shouldn't even be compared to a RF camera.![]()
Ya.. that's what I figured as well.. just what I need... more justification to spend money

No forum. It's a point and shoot without a viewfinder! Not even a direct-view camera. It's just expensive, which makes it kind of like a leica. If they charged $900 for the Fuji F30 because of it's high-iso quality, would we consider giving it a forum?
It lends itself to being used like a rangefinder?
I don't really get that. Why the Dp-1 more than the F30?
I never really understood "rangefinder-like". Direct-view scale focusing, okay. But a camera without any viewfinder? We have to have principles.

My understanding you can get an opitional viewfinder for around $130.00.

OK, look. I honestly don't think this board needs a DP1 forum. I don't need to talk about the damn camera. But what is it about this thing that makes people who don't have one so desperate to convince the world that the people who do are morons? Why should anyone give a crap about somebody else's camera? Good christ, you'd think we were plumping for gang rape or the reintroduction of slavery.
Here's why I like it. 1) Great lens, at my favorite focal length. 2) Amazing IQ, and for those of you who are looking at internet jpegs and haven't uploaded RAW files, yet think you know they suck, shut up. 3) small. I have an F30, it's terrific, but the DP1's files are really special. TO ME. What other people think, I honestly don't care. Write speed, menu, ****ty LCD, slow AF (I haven't noticed this problem, personally, but what do I know?, I've only been shooting with the thing for a month): I just don't give a crap. It focuses faster than all my film cameras, and has a better LCD than all my film cameras, and I'm perfectly satisfied with my film cameras, so there you go.
If you don't want a DP1 forum here, fine. I don't either. But for chrissake, please shut the hell up about how I am WRONG for liking something THAT YOU HAVEN'T EVEN USED.

Hmmm.
I'm not *sure*, but I think that's the first time those words have been used in the same sentence... in the Point & Shoot forum.
That being said, I agree. A camera is a personal choice, and the DP1 is an exciting machine. I can't wait to get my hands on one and give it a test run.
As the gentleman at the camera store said about my Leica - "Those who love theirs really love theirs. And those who don't have one, don't get it."
But I don't think it deserves its own forum.

The best camera is one that still works!
Any camera that has the ability to incite an argument the way the DPI does should be shown the door quickly!
We lost a lot of blood fur and feathers around here when the M8 hit the market which does actually have a little in common with the Sigma ... it's smart and stupid at the same time!
Seriously though, I think the 'Point and Shoot' (sounds dumb) forum should get the chop and a 'Compact AF' forum that encompasses digital and film should replace it. No DP1 forum though ... it would have very little traffic and just take up extra space!

Chill out dude! I for one didn't knock your camera. I just wasn't impressed with the photos I saw with it. MOF there are very few digital cameras I do care for. The Ricoh is one I like & the M8 is another. But I must admit that the M8 remains in a class by it's self along with the Epsom RD-1. But to tell someone to "shut the hell up" is just plain WRONG!!OK, look. I honestly don't think this board needs a DP1 forum. I don't need to talk about the damn camera. Rather than a forum called "Dissing People 1", it would be better to have a forum about "Deferential Politeness 101".
RF photography at this historical juncture is generally predicated on 1) the acceptance of a refusal (technically, of macro and telephoto, as well as the WYSIWYG (couldn't resist another acronym, hahaha!) "through the lens view (TTLV!!!)") and 2) a shared proximity between subject and object (in human terms, everything is close enough to touch, but no so close you're living in Lilliput). The DP1 does macro and it gives a TTLV, so on those grounds alone I don't see it as analogous to a Rangefinder. But the renaming of the Point&Shoot forum is a good idea. After all, a Bessa L ain't exactly a rangefinder, either.
At its best moments, RFF brings those two qualities (refusal and shared proximity) to a form of open, congenial community. At other times, they degenerate into flame wars.

You guys are crazed.
From what I've seen from the camera, it produces image quality on par with Digital SLRs. And it's barely bigger than a credit card. It has a 28mm prime lens of excellent quality. Sure it's only f4 but it's already quite big - if it was f2.8 it wouldn't be a pocket camera anymore. The high ISO performance looks to be really good to me, I've seen pictures pushed to iso 1600 and they're very good. The 800 is even good!

I think you had too much to dream last night.
Please look at this image and honestly tell me that if your brand new 800 Euro Nokton lens did this you wouldn't return or resell it immediately!
I wouldn't even have to consult my peers for advice on this issue - the defective equipment would be tossed. Some people have naively expressed the opinion that the effect is cool and psychedelic or whatever but personally I believe this is a design defect that gets in the way of classic photographic story telling.

An unfortunate effect for sure, I really think that would be pretty annoying - however looking at flickr groups for the dp1 I barely ever see any with that type of flare. I think there's just under 10 000 pictures from the dp1 on there. I'd bet that it would only get that flare under certain circumstances.
Also, I'd be willing to bet that It'll be taken care of in a firmware update. When it first came out some pictures had a green vignetting to them, and sigma took care of that with their firmware update.
The actual resolution, colors, sharpness and pictures from the dp1 looks to be fantastic.

I do not think you need a special forum just for the DP1. The Bessa L and the GRD seem to do very well on the P&S space and I think the DP1 is in the same category as they are. Some of the Olympus XAs live there as they do not have rangefinders too. I think the head bartender would split off a separate forum is there was a volume issue or obvious handling/technical differences. Bring the DP1 lovers over and have post some great topics and conversations so we can all learn and you never know.
BTW, I've put some really expensive Leica glass on my old Bessa Ls and they were still just point and shoots. Which oddly enough was what I wanted them to be.

This thread is absolutely hilarious.
And just to add flame to the fuel, I admit that secretly I have been thinking about selling my Leica gear and replacing it with a Canon G9!
So, in a way the old guard of this forum is justified to fear the powerful compact digital cameras who're slowly making the classic FF cameras look obsolete (i'm not talking about Dp1).
So, yes it is a bad idea to allow a DP1 section in this forum because soon there will be request for a G9 section, Ricoh section - until the film camera sections stops getting any traffic (their traffic is very slow anyway).
But on the other hand if those members who use digital cameras more often than film, do not find a platform to discuss with fellow RFF members then they would migrate to other forums. This is something that RFF admin must be aware of.
The only reason I visit this forum is because there are some really interesting topics in non-gear related sections, I ever hardly visit the M series section or any even SLR section.
cheers,

It is not a rangefinder so does not deserve its own forum. But I regularly see posts here with zero RF content so I guess any post about the DP-1 at least would be better than a rant on politics or whatever.
I got my DP-1 a few days ago and love it. True the LCD sucks, the AF sucks but I love the IQ and the manual focus wheel. I was a former GRD user and relied on the Snap mode and this wheel is just about perfect.

Yeah I really can't understand why this camera is getting so much flak, especially from people who havent used it or attempted to get to know it.
I bought a DP1 last week to replace my Ricoh GRD and it really is in a different league. Sure the lens is only F4 and it is quite expensive for a point and shoot but it is pretty much the only camera that offers decent quality in a small size.
Things that Impress me:
+ Really good image quality, around 8-10mp, clean and sharp up to 400iso, and at 800 perfectly useable (better than my GRD was at 200iso). Noise is small and monochrome, not multicolored and blotchy like in the GRD.
+Proper depth of field, sure you dont get anything mind blowing with 28mm F4 but a close up environmental portrait gives you a nice blurred background, and its lovely to use a digital compact that doesnt make every shot look like it was taken at F16
+ With a decent SD card raw write times are around 4seconds, and this is definately not worse than my GRD (and I am actually getting a nice looking decent file from it, not a noise ridden mess)
+ Once one gets to know the menus and the layout of the camera, it really isn't half as bad as people are making out. Quick to use the camera in the manual focus mode, which I think is quite nifty, and also very reminiscent of using a rangefinder when combined with an external viewfinder
+a really nice movie mode, with depth of field, kinda like super 8 film
Basically it annoys me people bashing this camera without really giving it a chance. I am thankful that Sigma had the guts to make a camera which aside from sinking thousands on an M8 (I am a photography student and cant afford that option) is the closest in digital to using a film rangerfinder or something like an Xa. Money well spent IMO, with a little exploration the camera handles fine, and the images it takes are great and in a class of their own for a small compact.
So yeah, I dont necessarily think this camera needs it's own forum, but I do think it should be given a chance!

this is my PERSONAL OPINION...but if i had it my way...there would be no slr forun, no point & shoot etc...only rangefinders, pure & simple.
there are lots of forums that cover everything and when we started here it was only rf and it was a real sanctuary and i would love to return to that.
but then, it's not my forum.
joe
I fully agree, I am here for the rangefinders. ..... if this becomes a forum for point & shoot stuff and (D)SLR then I am out....
