It´s dirty. It´s been neglected for 4 decades. Front element was out in the open all this time.

aperture ring feels sticky.
collapsible movement feels very sticky.

BUT
focus movement is smoooooth like anything i have ever used.

lens inside is clean. No fungus and no haze. There is a spot, something i don´t know.

Now.. what to expect from this lens? I would like to clean it at home but don´t know if it´s doable.

It was a present and will go on my M3.

Any tips?

Thanks!!!

Any tips?

The front element is made of very soft glass, and is very prone to damage, so I'd be veeeeery surprised if that front element cleans up to give you a lens that's fully usable. You can see my experiment with three different Summar lenses here. Even if the lens doesn't clean up very well, it'll probably make a nice soft focus glowy portrait lens.

Rear element.

Is it missing anything?

Nope, all there.

The Summar can flare in direct light.

I had untrashed Summar which was unused for decades. It has gunk accumulated in and outside,
but I was able to clean it without scratching. Once it was cleaned, not so much flaring.
Summarit 50 1.5 was more fragile to clean because of very soft coating.

I have one that came with a IIIa and it is in good condition after a CLA from Youxin Ye. It does flare somewhat but produces great results on black and white film. It's a tiny lens until you mount the dedicated hood. It will also work with the adjustable hood - don't know the name - made for 50/90/135 A36 lenses and that makes a much smaller package. Be careful, though. It will start a massive GAS attack to acquire other LTM lenses of the same era.

Front element is gone. It´s seriously damaged.

I have been looking for a 50mm and don´t like any of the offers for one reason or another.
Elmars are one stop too dark at 2.8

Zeiss Sonnars have the wobble focus after some time.
PLannars are too clinical and distort some.

Summicrons are too expensive.
Noktons are heavy and image rendering is not what i want.

Heliar only opens to 3.5

All of them cost north of 500 dollars.

I got this Sumar as a present. Unless it´s too expensive to clean/lubricate and gives me a bad image.. it will be my M3 50mm lens untill something else happens.

Now we are talking. I like this approach.
