Found iPad app to develop DNG files

Yeah, I was kinda (only kinda) excited with the Photoshop Touch announcement. Haven't tried it out yet... now's a chance for you to test it out and let us know. 😉
But having said that the first review/test article I read did point out that maximum export size is only something like 1600x1600? I mean WTF?!! Really hoping that is fixed with an update shortly...

Actually I was impressed with the iPhoto for iOS app as well. Although not sure how suitable it would be for extensive editing, (don't know if it has levels and curves for instance?) but the gestures and edits all look really easy.

I would be very interested to see how PhotoRaw and other apps handle DNGs on the iPad 3 (or is everyone just calling it 'the new iPad'? 😛 ) It's only going to keep getting better...

Am I seeing a huge hole in the market here? I mean, the mobile devices like android tablets and the iPad are more than man enough to run an app like PS elements, so why don't they??

So I just imported an M9 DNG file into PhotoRaw via Dropbox (I don't have a connection kit yet) on my shiny new iPad '3'. The download from Dropbox took some time (even on a fast wifi connection) but adjustments were quick and responsive and the export to JPEG was surprisingly quick.

As a working photographer who only edits from RAW I think it is impractical at this stage as it doesn't really support the whole download/edit process (though that would be the same in Snapseed), however if you are happy to only take a few selected images from the camera to edit it could work.

Personally I will be sticking to my trusty MacBook Pro for on site edits but it is encouraging to see where the technology is going and I will certainly be leaving the laptop at home next time I go on holiday or am doing personal work where there is no deadline to worry about.

I picked up an iPad camera connection kit today and had a play around with some DNG files in PhotoRaw. Honestly i'm a bit disappointed, the iPad handled the process quite well and once uploaded was relatively fast but the app did not really make the most of the RAW format. My experience was that it struggled to correct images that were slightly over or under exposed and acted more like you were adjusting a JPEG. I got a much better result saving the RAW file with no adjustments made and then using Snapseed. As much as I dislike processing images from JPEG I think it is the only way if you want to go this route, the new iPad seems to be able to handle RAW but the app is not up to the task.

Any further evaluations of Raw editing for The iPad and dngs since last year?

I just got a fully loaded ipad air with the intention of making it my only travel computing solution for photos and as a 2nd backup of images.

I think photoraw still continues to be the only app capable to open Leica DNGs.
But performance improved with new releases: now it tooks 60 seconds to import a M9 dng on my ipad2
I don't know how it behaves on newer ipads.


EDIT: PiRAWnha too does the job, with half the import time (30seconds), but much slower adjust settings (and terrible GUI)

I've been using PhotoRAW on both iPad 2 and iPad mini for some time. I've also been using the latter as my only computer on travel for about a year now. It works very well when I want/need to process raw files. I'm pretty sure it will do much better on the iPad 4 or iPad Air as they both have more RAM than the iPad 2 and iPad mini.

However, when traveling I normally set the cameras for JPEG+raw because doing the iPad mini is a lot faster and more suited to light JPEG processing rather than doing raw conversions. It also makes me work my camera settings a little more stringently and produce better JPEGs and raw files so that what I work with is better quality all the way around. 🙂

ok, look at the new version of Photogene!!!

it's fast (15 sec on ipad2 for a M9 dng), it has a near perfect GUI and it's very complete (ie it's the only app that can manage chroma and luminance denoise separately...)

I think I've found my definitive app... it seems a lightroom miniature...
