Found Kodachrome Sailors/Marines/Airmen

I've been cleaning up and found these Kodachrome slides, all given to me by someone who was getting rid of all their camera equipment a few years ago. I forget who it was, only remember that they were going to throw them away and I thought it was sad (they had been in the Navy). I'm gonna guess at least some of this is in Guam, as apparently that's where the 595th AF band was based from '45 to '63. Correct me if I'm wrong. Like a lot of Kodachrome they've held up very well! I didn't want to clog things up too badly, so I picked my 6 favorite... there are a few more on this Flickr page I made.

I have more... some pretty funny ones with the guys in the barracks in various articles of womens clothing, I just gotta track them down, will scan them if and when I find them.

The very last existing Liberty ship is set to be sold for scrap this year.
Let us know if you find any US Navy Seabees in there. The historical value of even everyday life type photos is great these days, especially in Guam. When I was there in 2003, Betty Peredo "Seabee Betty" had died and there was an island wide feast in her honor. Debbie Peredo, her daughter, has taken up the morale work that Betty did since the Marines and Seabees liberated Guam from the Imperial Japanese forces in WWII. Both the Navy and "Seabee Debbie" may be interested in the photos for historical records. Just a thought.
I definitely know that beach in #11 on the flickr page. The shot of the band looks like it's at Anderson AF base. The buildings up there are built differently from the ones down south on the Navy side of the island. Ah, Guam... Kinda miss it.

Great to see these. Thanks for posting them. A nice reminder that Australia owes a lot to the US defence personnel who stood between us and Japan. As A child I do remember how terrified people here were of a Japaneses invasion. This might not be a quite appropriate comment but i am aware of the sacrifices of the US defence forces.

Really? Is that the Jeremiah O'Brien? I thought there was still one left that was used as a floating museum. I'm really glad you liked the pictures.

Here in Philly we have quite a few iconic boats including Admiral Dewey's Flagship from Manila Bay (Olympia)... They're now even considering scrapping HER... almost seems that we have a certain contempt for our history.

The big issue in the air force in 1949 was the integration of black units. The black airmen in the service at that time were the best-of-the-best and worked hard to prove it. The private and the airman at the pool are dressed like they are on parade and everyone else is kind of shambly.

The airfield was named North Field until 1949, then Andersen Field, if you can find any reference to the airbase. (Pop was based at North, then Isely on Saipan during the war. Haigh, he was scared, too.)

Funny you should mention it, the gentlemen who took all of these pictures and later gave them to me is black.
