A Redditor and his friend found a Leica in Central Park:

Just putting this out here in case the owner is one of you guys.

If it happens to be a Leica 0-Series serial no. 116, I know how to track down the owner. And btw, that Redditor and his friend are good men.

Damned nice of you to attempt to find the owner. My hats off to you!
Which type of Leica?

John - I think they are trying to get the real owner to come forward with camera & lens type/model/serial no. to confirm the ownership.

Right John... I figured that, but if I simply say I lost a M4 in the park and the camera happens to be a M4, they aren't going to just give it to me without more info. I guess I saw no harm in stating a model.

Even if I found a Brownie hanging on a bench, I'd still want the owner to get his/her camera back. But being a Leica, I'd be tempted to run a roll of film through it myself before returning it. Just tempted, though. I'd be afraid it would mess up, and then I'd feel like an idiot.

Maybe contact Leica in NJ....if it is registered, then there is an owner than can be found.

In the UK you would take it to the nearest police station, get a receipt and if unclaimed after 3 months you will get it back. I had a colleague who found £400 in the street and got it back from the police. Stealing by finding is an offence in the UK.

Stealing by finding? That's funny. This from the same society as sanctions some of the nastiest bank hijinks in the world, after the USA of course.

There used to be a law in London that if you bought stolen goods at certain street markets, you had the right to keep it no matter what.
I think that law was just recently repealed, it lasted for centuries.
PS: Found it:
