I had a visit from a friend today who I haven't seen for eight years or so ... he now lives in Sydney and was passing through Brisbane on business and dropped into work briefly to see me and say hello. When I last saw him photography was not a part of my life at all and he was quite surprised to find out that I was now so immersed in it and also surprised that I choose to shoot film. He assumed that the world had moved on to digital a long time ago and that film would be very hard to get!
Cameron has a very well paid job in property management and in the time I've known him he's always had the latest and greatest toys ... obviously that hasn't changed much because he mentioned that he now has a D700 that he uses for family and holiday snaps etc. He also mentioned that he still has the last film camera he bought several years ago still with it's original packaging and only ever got around to putting a couple of rolls of film through it before he switched to digital. Apparently it's a Nikon SLR and the only thing he could remember about it was that he paid over four thousand dollars for it new ... he seemed to think that it may have been an F100 but that seems unlikely considering the price he paid!
This is where it gets interesting ... I asked what he intended doing with it and he said "Why do you want it, if so it's yours because it's worth nothing to me now an is obviously not worth selling so you may as well have it!" He won't be back in Sydney for a few days so until then I won't actually know what model it is and even he is wrong in his memory about what it cost and it is actually an F100 I'll still be well pleased to get a camera of that calibre with so little use for the mere cost of post.
There's just the faintest hope in my mind however that it may actually be an F6 because one clear thing I remember about Cameron over the years that I've known him ... is that he always bought the best!

ps ... whatever it is when I get it I'll be giving my excellent Nikon N90s away for the price of post and packing because it won't be needed and I feel that I should continue the karma by passing on my good fortune to some deserving soul ... so keep your eyes on the classifieds!

from your description of the guy seems more like the F6. Seems you got lucky Keith! The F6 feels really great smooth and bright.

I got a free Nikon F5 w/ 50mm lens (along with a Nikon Coolscan 8000 scanner, and 300 rolls of film) three years ago. I still use all of it. I remember how excited I was. An F6 thought... DANG!

I can relate to your mood, although I'm not in your same situation.
A few weeks ago I was "teaching" some photography basics to a colleague of mine onto her D90. I told her "Well, if you could have also a film camera would be good, because you might compare the one to the other" She told me "Errr I think my cousin has a film camera he doesn't use and probably he would give it to me for free.. I think it's a F100.. but I'm not sure it's a good one"
I told her. "Don't worry, if you don't like it and he doesn't need it anymore I'll gladly offer to take it" :angel:
Well, things went so that she moved to another place so nothing was done, but what the heck, everyone of us would like to have such a cousin, right ?!

My first Nikon (FE) was given to me by a co-worker...he said it didn't work and even when it did he didn't know how to use it...(It had the deadest battery I have ever seen)
I know the F5 was a pricey camera when new, I don't think the F4 got that high...My guess would be either the F5 or F6...

Keith, you have all the luck. Had a friend show up with a camera that had belonged to his brother a few weeks ago that he wanted to give me...but it was a moldy old Ricoh from the 1980's! LOL
