Sorry for appearing stupid, but what are the mixing chambers for? I've a Vivitar VI, I've the negative holders for 35mm and MF but nothing mentioned about mixing chambers, I wonder if this model doesn't use them? 😕

The mixing chambers are for adding filtration either for colour or contrast in B&W such that the light that hutles through the lens does not contain any 'hot spots' of a certain filter colour.

All colour diffuser enlargers use a mixing chamber of sorts, with different neg sizes the chambers can be different for better light efficiency. I use a Meopta 6x6 and always use the same 6x6 mixing chamber for MF and 35mm. A dedicated 35mm version would reduce the enlarging times but hey I can wait a second or two extra.

Hope this helps.

Hhm, come to think of it every Vivitar VI I've seen on ebay has never mentioned mixing chambers, not separate ones, I wonder if its something to do with the makeup of the enlarger. It has a condensor which I was told was unusual for a colour enlarger as normally only B&W ones had one. Anyway, should really have tested it as I've had it a few months but never got round to it. It wasn't very expensive but apperas to work. Thanks for the information. 🙂

smudwhisk,

I guess I should have added that its the multi format enlargers that tend to specify the chamber as it can be changed from one format to another. Some enlargers have a fixed chamber like some older Durst examples. The important thing is that a bigger chamber can be used for a smaller format but not the other way around.

This model comes with two interchangeable mixing chambers,
one optimized for 35mm and smaller formats,
the other for anything larger than 35mm.

Indeed, either can be used for 35mm,
but the smaller one allows shorter exposure times.

To further regulate exposure, this enlarger uses attenuators
which can be placed between the lamp and mixing chamber.
