I just received the new catalog from Freestyle (had ordered some Arista Premium) and noticed a mention of a new BW film in 100 & 400 speeds. It's called LegacyPro and it's manufactured in Japan. Could this be rebranded Neopan? Acros 100 and NP 400? No prices listed and it notes that it will be available in January 2009. Is there anyone outside of Fuji who makes film in Japan?

Is this another sign that film has to be mass distributed at any cost to unload it?

More likely that they buy enough of it to market it under their house brand. It's easier for Fuji to ship huge amounts to just one place.

I think it's a straightforward resell, rebrand model... Fuji and Kodak can resell brands at lower prices to wholesalers who can rebrand the product. Fuji and Kodak can move more products; wholesalers get the benefit of a lower cost of entry and can thus lower selling prices, and you and I can get the same film we've loved for years at a much lower price. It's a win-win-win.

When I was in the wireless industry, many, many folks came up to me saying how much their Brand X mobile service was just so much better than AT&T... little did they know that Brand X was basically a reseller of AT&T services, i.e., same network. And no, this is not a plug for Big T.

If you look at the developing times for Legacy Pro 100 they're the same as Fuji Acros 100. The times for Legacy Pro 400 compare to Neopan 400.

that's my obversation, as well. i think it's safe to say that it's the same emulsion.

that is a good thing. the more film fuji and kodak can sell (to whoever it may be) means film will be kept alive for that much longer. it also kinda makes up for fuji bulk rolls being discontinued.

It does make up for Fuji discontinuing their bulk rolls. The discontinuation was, frankly, a big reason why I use Kodak. If I can get Fuji films at a more reasonable price, I'm more likely to use them. They're only a quarter or so more expensive than the rebranded Kodak...

And what's with all this secrecy crap? I understand they can't advertise "Fuji" and "Kodak", especially while carrying the name-branded stuff. But would it be so bad for them to drop the truth if/when someone calls them up. They don't even have to say "Arcos" or "Neopan" they could just confirm Fuji.

Is the Arista Premium 400 a re-branded TriX 400? I read Tom A or someone saying it was; has anyone used it who can confirm that it is in fact TriX 400? Thanks.

The website says a roll of iso100 is $2.79, which is the same price as the fuji neopan 100. What would be the advantage of buying the Legacy Pro?

I was at their catalog store/warehouse last week...I picked up a few rolls of Premium Arista 400 35mm and some of their Arista EDU Ultra 400 120 rolls...
I've used one roll of the 120 film, gave a roll of the 35mm to one of my daughter's friends and loaded another roll of 35mm for my daughter in her Pentax MX...

Looking forward to developing some of this stuff...

I have been shooting the Arista Premium 400 and mixed/matched with Tri X. Same exposures, same developers and unless there is something I cant see, it is the same film!
Most film manufacturers make what is called a "parent roll" - 50-52" wide and 4000ft long. These rolls are coated and then run through the slitter and in case of 35mm, the perforations. They (Kodak) would actually run a batch for you - maybe even with your name or initials as edgemarking if you ordered the whole thing, somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 000 rolls!

Could we all get together and order 40,000 rolls of "Rangefinderforum 400" ? It would sure give us the incentive to shoot more!
