All i can say is go for it, there is a lot of tit-for-tat on this forum regarding gear. It's all personal and whilst people can argue this is better than that, go with your gut instinct... trial and experiment with the XP1.

I recently traded my M8 for an R-D1 (and lenses) and then went to the XP-1 recently, and I can't imagine going back.. The M2 I use, to me, is the 'true' rangefinder experience if i'm going to go for that (I carry with me when I go shooting, along with the XP-1). I can only give you my opinion on the matter, as this is just how I feel and my experiences have lead me to this decision.

I agree with the tit for tat bit, there is a sentiment that you are mad selling Leica to go anywhere else. Just do it. The M8 is a fine camera, I have one, and no doubt the XP-1 is as well. Try it and see. The worst that will happen is you could realize the M8 wasn't as bad after all, and buy back into one. Yep, you'll do some dough, somewhere, but that's part of the learning curve.
I'm running the same set of "what if's" in my head at the moment, not enjoying the R/F experience as a glasses wearer, whereas my DSLR with decent eye relief in the finder is much much easier.
Sell and see, report back with your findings/feelings.

I think it also depends how much of your investment you expect to get back from your M8. Today, even though I purchased at a hefty discount from new (a$5000) at the time, wouldn't expect to get any more than $2000 at most now. So why sell it? It still is great in good light, and still offers the RF method. I have X100 and XPRO1, but you still have to turn those on to focus and frame. To me, that is what is great about RFs, to be able to see and focus the scene and anticipate the shot before even turning the camera on, which you can't really do with the X series.

I've made a crazy thing sold my Leica M8 and REGRET I really like the "fee" of do Manual Focus/Frame..... so X1 will not give me that..... better keep M8 and buy X1...

For one M8 body you can get an x-pro1 with the xf 35mm 1.4. I got my kit from NYC for 2050$. Sometimes, I miss the feel of my M7 or M6, but I sold them along time ago, because I thought that I can get equal a better results with an Zeiss ikon zm for what I want to do and I was right.
