I decided to go to the Cleveland Air Show today and figured my digital camera (Nikon Coolpix 8700) would be perfect for the job.

Boy, was I mistaken.

I came away with some great shots of the static displays and a couple of tolerable aerial shots but as I was reviewing them tonight I was struck by how my photography was adversely affected by the severe limitations of the gear I was using.

Yes, that's right, "severe limitations." I actually said that, twice; me, defender of the digicam. Mark this day on the calendar.

There wasn't a single shot I wanted that I couldn't have taken with my trusty Olympus Trip 35 zone focus, two shutter speed, auto-aperture marvel from decades past or my simple, friendly Konica C35 Automatic. In fact, I blew a ton of shots because of AF lag, AF failure-to-lock, cryptic manual focus controls, slow zoom speed... I could go on, but I'll spare you the gory details. In short, the digicam let me down badly.

On the plus side, I wandered by an outdoor concert on my way back to the train station and got some good shots of the band currently playing which I could not have with my RFs. <sigh> It just doesn't make up for not getting the shots I wanted though. :bang:

Thanks all, I needed to vent.

We are all--one time or another--seduced by technology that sometimes just isn't as good as the product replaced.

Very true.

Today, I woke up very early and decided to just shower and head out to Brecksville with my Fuji, didn't think I was going to see any photos but it was too nice to stay indoors. I was rewarded with almost perfect, soft light and eye-popping greens everywhere I looked. I wound up blowing off four rolls of NPH 400, just felt like there were shots everywhere. If what I saw through the viewfinder comes out on film, I'll just be tickled pink.

That really helps make up for the disappointing last outing :)
