I've been reading posted comments about the F30 (now F31) and the D-lux 3 and want to know which is the prefered camera. I know the F31 is said to have better low light performance. And the D-Lux 3/ DCM-LX2 has the cool widescreen capture. Movie mode is fun but not critical. So if these cameras were to go head to head which takes the better pictures, not just in low light but in all round use.... like street shots, in a pub, travel, portrait, and macro....... Which would perform closest to a Hexar AF????

no, that's exactly what I want to hear. I suppose I've asked my question wrong. If the old masters were to use digital, would they grab an M8 or would the lean towards feature rich digi-cams???

The D-Lux3 is undoubtedly a digicam, but a pretty good one. The raw mode is a saving grace, and it is also reasonably fast (files are huge, but ACR will covert to 10mb DNGs). I don't like composing with an lcd screen, but on the other hand this is a tiny, unobtrusive camera that can be taken anywhere and will not attract attention. I am pretty happy with it for what it is ... a digicam.

I'm using an old F-11 and it allowed me to take pictures without interfere with people environment.. The F30 (which is a tat different from the F31) is much much better.
BTW the shutter lag is non existent on the F30 (less than 0.1) and that is one of the most best features besides High quality ISO photos.

I think the only real performance close the Hexar AF would be the Ricoh GRD

I just discovered the greatness that is a Yashica T4

but I still carry my Fuji F30 with me everywhere, it is great even for the outdoors as long as you bring the exposure compensation down 2/3rds a stop

It has great macro as well

I'll post a few examples from the F30

Rene Burri with some digi-Leica (although I don't know if he uses this professionally):

Oh boy, those photos are great. After I posted this query I found some info on the GX 100 & GRD. The M8 is out of my price range so I was looking for something I could afford. Everything I've read says these are wonderful cameras. Now, how to decide between the GX 100 and the GRD.......

Don't be fooled with that picture of Rene Burri

it was taken with a Mamiya 6

a great set though 😛

If you get the GX100, I'd love to read your opinion of it. I own an LX1 - love it compared to other digital p&s - but in almost every situation it is outperformed by my rangefinders. IMHO the LX1 is a terrific bargain used, allowing for its point and shoot flaws. And no need to pay for the Leica brand on these joint venture Panasonic cameras - they're the same.

That is true, I don't plan on a GX 100 or GRD as a replacement of my fine rangefinders, just a compliment to my camera collection. I used to have an Oly 8080 and kinda miss it..... but now want something smaller to carry around.

I own both a F31 and ad Panny LX1, and I'd say they complement each other very well, of course the fact that The F31 can't shoot RAW is a big minus, but straight out of the camera it produces better pictures than the Panny, and the low light performance of the F31 is just out of this planet, at iso 800 is just marginally worse than my R-D1.

Of course what I would really like is an LX1 with the fuji sensor in it, or maybe an F31 with a wider angle Leica zooom and RAW. 😀

I was very impressed by these shots made in SF with a F30. So much that I even consider(ed) to buy a F30. But fortunately I was strong enough to resist this GAS attack (after buying 2 M's plus lenses I live in a cardboard box under the bridge)

I feel the gas coming on, and the remedy seems to be either the F30 (or F31) with great low light capability and quality pictures right from the camera. Or, the GX 100 allowing greater creative control, and RAW...... I'm thiking the GX 100 might be the better cure in the long run, but it's twice ( almost triple) the cost of the F30,,,, what to do, what to do.......

f30 or f31 would be good to have

f30 or f31 would be good to have

I have many hundreds of great photos from my f30 with several dozen printed at 8x10, and have an f31 on order.

Also, have great photos from the Hexar AF, wish I never sold that, but I couldn't have afforded the processing to do 6000+ photos as I've done with the f30 in 6 months, nor would I have had iso 3200 with film, affordably.

I think the f30/31 is great if you a) can still find them, and b) don't need/want raw or film for the particular p&s needs.

I don't know that the lumix's can match the low light capabilities of the fujis if that is a need, but I think the glass in most lumix's is very good.

I can't wait for a sigma p&s or fuji IS IR to become available and affordable.

mainly for backup

mainly for backup

my f30 has 6000+ photos taken with it, and they're getting a little difficult to find with the new f40 being the current model in that line. Also, interested in seeing if I can see the effects of the reduced noise reduction that is apparently in the f31 at high iso speeds, but not in the f30.

Why buying an F31 when you already have an F30? They are nearly identical.
