I know the info regarding Fuji's Super CCD EXR (a 1"x1.6" CCD sensor thats slightly larger than a full frame 36x24) has been out since September 08 and I guess people assumed that it would naturally see application in Fujifilm's DSLR markets.

However just yesterday they announced the F200EXR which appears to use this same sensor in a P&S form factor camera body. (see Here).

Don't these developments defy the full-frame backfocus issues that have obstructed the development of a full-frame M rangefinder body?

No. Unless I completely misunderstand the issues with building a FF M camera, I don't see how this sensor is any different WRT this issue. Now, it is a really interesting application of the technology, and I hope it makes it's way into more cameras, but given the current state of the issue, it would still be a cropped frame M camera- right?

A 1/1.6" sensor does mean the sides of the sensor are 1"x1.6". It's still a small, albeit improved, sensor.

Don’t Leave Without Your Favourite Film
Photographic versatility is stretched yet further with the addition of five Film Simulation modes. Producing beautiful images is something which is in the very DNA of Fujifilm, and Fujifilm engineers are determined to leverage the considerable strengths gained through years of perfecting film to making the best sensor possible. Introduced to compacts for the very first time, the FinePix F200EXR offers Velvia/ Vivid mode for rich and luscious landscapes, Provia/ Standard mode for excellent, sharp, standard photography, ASTIA/Soft mode for fine, smooth tonality, Black and White for dramatic monochromes and Sepia for a warm-toned period look are also featured.

Not to mention that one of the world's leading film manufacturers is offering us this function to let us know that film really is dead! 😛

That sensor is (in round numbers) about 7x5,5 mm in size. The terminology for sensor size is related to an old standard for tv-camera tubes and appears to be used now purely to hide the miniscule size of the sensor. Or maybe I am being excessively cynical again.

Sensor sizes compared:

The 1/1.6" Super CCD EXR sensor is a tiny bit bigger than the 1/1.7" sensor on the chart.

The crop factor would unfortunately be huge on an M camera.

That is not to say that they could not use this technology on a bigger sensor - and I hope they do. But this one isn't it.

1/1.6" is nowhere near "slightly larger than full frame", but a mere 7.78 x 5.83 mm in size...
