they're exactly the same. i thought they were supposed to be different.

the iii is very niiice, though.

See my Fuji 690 / 670 site

The difference with the viewfinder/rangefinder on the GSW690III is the internal design of the VF/RF - not any significant, visible changes to the user.

Dante Stella describes the change:

"Totally new VF/RF mechanism. The older gold-coated beamsplitter system is replaced by a new vernier (Leica-style) hard-edged rectangular spot on an aluminized beamsplitter. The upshot is that brightness is increased but VF-RF spot contrast is reduced."

Never owned a GW690 but had a GAS690II and sold it and just recently picked up a GSW690III direct from Fuji. My rep retired and had a couple of loaner cameras that Fuji sold direct to some of their commercial cuatomers. I managed to snag the wide one at a very good price. I had forgotten how fantastic that camera is and how fine the 65mm lens is.

I owned a 6x9II and now the 6x7III. The rangefinder of the III is better no argument. But then I prefer the II's looks and feel. IMO objectively the III is better.
Please look at my thread about Mamiya6 versus Bronica rf.

It was the GW690II 90mm.

Today I looked at some of the chromes and ended up banging my head against the wall. Never sell one but try to become worthy of it.
The only disadvantage is the volume of the beast. When I tell my wife I am taking the monster out, she knows wich camera is going along.

Take care, Wim

They are large machines aren't they. After using cameras like the 690 and 4x5 Technikas I have to laugh at the Leica folks complaining this or that lens is too big and heavy. Size is all relative.

another viewfinder surprise: the gw690iii has a fuzzy circular rf spot instead of a sharp edged pill shaped rf spot. just an fyi from a happy new owner. ;)

The RF patch on the III series is definitely fuzzier than the previous generation. Such a large camera and it has a smallish RF patch. Go figure.

I was pleasantly surprised by the automatic spindle release on the III and find the bubble level on top to be useful as well.
