My view on this - as it was certainly considered - was a preference for a 28-35mm range lens; the Leica P&S's have a history of mechanical/electrical issues and this is an area Fuji has demonstrated all round capabilities; Fuji also makes great lens; but I just cant highlight enough how useful I find the external +/-EV control.
 
A friend and I were just looking at Klasses on Saturday night. As people's samples can attest, they take wonderful photos. For ¥70000+ though, the build quality doesn't impress me. Far too much plastic for my liking, and the cable (I guess?) that connects the lens to the body can be seen sticking out inside the back when the lens is recessed. What are the chances of it getting snagged or ripped?

Ive actually had this camera almost since it came out at the end of 2006, Ive used it a lot and Ive had no fault with it at all. Fujifilm has a history of compact cameras and miniturisation so I wouldnt be too concerned about visible ribbon cables. Unlike the Leica variants that have many reports of shutter failures.

"Too much plastic..." were you looking at the same camera??? This is a metal bodied camera. Not many compacts are this well made! Personally, I think i has exceptional build quality in this day and age.

Well, I can understand what TheHub was trying to say. The backbone of Klasse W or S are made of metal, with some other plastic components surrounding it. If you compare with Natura or other average compacts, Klasse is very metal. However, when compared to compacts made by Contax or Leica, Klasse still feels somewhat plastic. In addition, the structure, thickness and quality of titanium used also make some differences of feel. You really feel more solid when you hold a Contax T's compacts than a Klasse. I think this was what TheHub trying to say.

The Klasse W has my GAS acting up again-- I must have one...very expensive little number though...

I had the Rollei Version o the original Klasse---but 38mm was too much-- a 28mm version o this camera sounds really nice...
 
I ordered my Fujifilm Klasse W (Silver) from Hong Kong and it's coming on Wednesday. I'm so excited! Any tips to share in this wonderful classic camera? Thanks.

I had only ever put B&W through it, however it did a roll of Astia slide film last week in Korea and the Im impressed with the results (good metering & sharp)

Im going to east Java in Indonesia next month to photograph and will take 2x Mamiya 7II's and just cant carry the Leica's as well but this camera will certainly be there.

A word of warning - and Ive been bitten twice now. When the battery dies it just dies. Unfortunately, it first extends the lens then just stops so without a new battery you are stuck with a dead camera and need to be carefull of not knocking the lens.

Given the manual is only in Japanese, most things you can probably work out for yourself but there are some neat custom functions that are obvious. I will assume from page 70/71 of the manual you can workout how to get into the custom functions and change them from the pictures 😀

C1: Flash Mode: this lets you set the flash mode and it stays that way - otherwise every time you turn it on, auto flash is on.

C2: Self Timer Mode: ON = after shooting; OFF = every time you shoot it is off. (not exactly sure what this means as Ive never used it)

C3: Film Mode: This lets you decide if you want the film fully rewound into the canister of have the leader left out - (great if your developing your own B&W).

C4: Timing of Lens Movement Mode ON = when pressing shutter; OFF = half way pressing shutter button (again, never used it but I think its referring to when the lens decides to actually do its focusing thing)
 
Does 'learn the basic functions' mean 'fondle'?

Does 'test the camera' mean 'play with the camera'?

Whatever, have fun and tell how easy it is with a Japanese instruction book and English menus.
