I'm done with my 200+ rolls from several years ago, and liked it for bright outdoors, but always shot it at ISO 50.

My expired UC100 didn't need the +1 EV, and my Superia 400 (4 layer) is faster and more accurate colors than both Reala and UC100, and even some Portras.

Also with Superia, I can shoot it at box speed, or 1/3 EV less.

I also thought this was the case a year or so ago. Can anyone confirm/deny? My local shop still carries plenty and has said repeatedly that it's still available for them to order. Once I hear that it's running short I'm going to buy a ton, though, it's great stuff.
 
It's kind of scary the rate that iconic films are dropping off...
I'm pretty much all digital right now, but I don't like knowing that I won't be able to buy a pack of reala or neopan 1600 or whatever comes next...

In the time I've been at RFF I've never known there to be so many threads regarding various film types dropping off the tree as there are currently ... not to mention Kodak's ongoing woes along with speculation over their future! 😱

It's slightly disturbing times for any regular film user. We all aknowledge that digital has won the battle well and truly but I don't really like where we are at the the moment with the big two seemingly detemined to race each other to the bottom of the well! 🙁
 
I have 50-60 rolls of color negative film and some rollei digibase developer... when I finish this... time for d700?

Yep and did you see the other thread for elite chrome? I really liked that film...
 
I actually don't have a problem with limiting the variety of films offered as long as quality reasonable alternatives are available. I really don't use that much film, and when I do (even in older cameras), I'd like to have a quality film. So if Walgreens or the 99c store stop selling cheap Chinese C-41 - I can care less.
Reala on the other hand for me was a level or two up - on the border between consumer and professional film. But I can live with that too, naively hoping that limiting variety would help the film companies to limit production expenses and thus allowing them to stay longer in the film business with their other offerings...

With six Leica lenses and a dislike for big black SLRs, the D700 route doesn't appeal. Current plan is to stick with the M2 and M3 for five years or so and them buy an M9 or whatever the digital Leica is at that time. I have enough b/w film in the freezer.

I can't see b/w film completely disappearing (the Agfa/Maco/Rollei stuff must sell in tiny volumes yet they are introducing new lines), although it is beginning to feel like the End Of Days for colour.
 
One thing that irks is me is the price of a decent high speed colour film ... and it seems that Portra is the only game in town because you can't really rate Superior 800 as acceptable ... the colours of the Fuji offering are goddamn awful IMO!

The Portra is now around ten dollars per roll and when that finally goes as it inevitably will IMO ... where to?

The 400H is great IMO, but not really high-speed...
 
Digital capture does seem to have marginalized small format color film faster than I expected. Without the volume that small format film sales provides to Kodak and Fuji, it does look like the medium and large format color film choices will deteriorate further and faster too. Medium format digital capture continues to expand among professional users, putting more downward pressure on sales.

One thing for sure, however good color films have become, there will be fewer choices in the future whatever the format.
 
Arghh. I told myself I wouldnt read anymore threads about "xx being discontinued"! I am mainly a color TLR shooter so unless someone develops a digital Rollei simply subbing in Nikon d700 or a 5D does not totally satisfy (I've gone down that route already and subsequently sold it all). I also can't afford an m9 without selling all my m mount lenses. Doh!

Anyway, it's pointless to worry and wring my hands over things that are out of my hands so I'm going to make sure to shoot as much color film as humanely possible from now until it disappears.

Made a decision today.

I'll still shoot medium format colour, Portra pretty much exclusively and shoot the odd bit of colour in the OM2n's but mostly my film cameras will see service for black and white work in the not too distant future.

However I have to be realistic too, I have been considering a Nikon AF film SLR which would require a compliment of lenses (at least a 28mm and a 50mm.) That will probably cost me anywhere between £300 to £500. A pro-pack of 35mm Portra with postage costs me about £30. It will cost me £25 to process all five rolls, which is £55. With the project I have in mind for the next couple of years or so, it doesn't take much to have spent over a grand on equipment + film + processing and that's only the start.

So long as I can make my money back on the book, there are too many advantages to shooting a digital SLR on my next project. Decided to invest in a D90 or D7000 if the book goes OK. It will cost me a lot, but it should cost less in the long run.

I will give it some serious thought before pushing the button so to speak as the last thing I want with me on the next project is a camera that could be a liability (i.e. I don't want to get mugged!)

I stopped shooting Fuji some time ago with all their mucking around, I used to shoot Fuji Reala quite a lot. But I also shot Kodachrome quite a lot, and Elite Chrome quite a lot...

Sad day but have to think positively as hopefully it will up my game photographically and push me to deliver the project I have in mind. We'll see.

Kodak Gold 100 is the only one I can think of. It is a bit grainy, but I like its color rendition sometimes (click images for higher resolution). I think the current version, edge code 7, is a bit tricky to scan. Since there are so few ISO 100 films available, I think I'll just use higher ISO color films going forward.
