Fuji reala discontinued

Just found out that fuji real discontinued my favorite color film 😡😡😡

Quickly ordered 10 boxes of 5 rolls.... Seeing the total for 20 boxes was a bit much also a bit much to explain to my wife what all that film is doing in the freezes 😱
At the same time she just got the taste for taking images with her Holga was using this film....

Do you have a source for that information please? I don't regard a link to a page on Fuji's website promoting the films attributes, as an indication it has in fact been discontinued.

Recently I noted a reference to correspondence in this discussion from Fuji's Yuta Takano three weeks ago, informing that there are no plans to discontinue Reala. Not exactly definitive advice, but at least it quotes a source. What is yours?

Brett

I'm interested in what you don't like about Ektar 100. Not being contrary, as I like it, just genuinely interested in your perspective.
I found it to be disappointingly unsharp, with mushy (although very fine) grain. Assuming that processing was consistent - I always send C41 to the same pro lab - I'd rather have Reala's slightly bigger grain and higher sharpness.

But also much more expensive...

True indeed. In Germany Kodak films were always more expensive than Fuji, the Ektar 100 being on the top. In 4x5" it costs nearly the double of the Fuji Pro160S.

I already considered to get Portra 400 in 220 size, but it was more than double the cost of a single 120 film (??)

RIP Reala. (Unless there is hope it is a rumor - I'm emailing Fuji..)

Ricoh GR1s. cropped a bit.

I was told over a year ago that reala was discontinued, but I was able to buy it for months after locally. I guess a distributor still had stock.

Incorrect. However that was the misunderstanding at the time as the company decided to discontinue certain Reala products (it may have been 24 exp dropped for 36, or Pro packs for single rolls - I can't recall the precise details, and could not be bothered looking them up again, but I did write to them at the time). In the finest Fuji tradition, of course, they managed to announce it in such an oblique way, that the (incorrect) assumption on the part of most at the time, was that Reala had been dropped completely...

Good Morning John,

In regards to your enquiry unfortunately that is correct, the Reala 100 has been discontinued.
The only Reala product we now distribute is the Reala 120/12 which comes in a 5 roll pro pack. This product can be purchased at any Fuji Retailer.

Kind Regards

I wonder if this includes also 35mm film, as in small format it's called Superia Reala (plain Superia tweaked to Reala tech. In MF it's called just Reala, but it's also different from 135).

yes - it is 35mm as well - I asked about 35mm and 120. Didn't ask about sheet film if that was ever made. in consumer 35mm it seems only 200 and 400ASA Superior is available.

Thanks, Superia 200 pretty much fills my needs for slow color negative. If they would make 800Z I couldn't wish anything more. Inferia 400 isn't my choice.

That's unfortunate, but not really too much of a concern to me. I could never get the colours right on any of my 120 scans and 35mm only seemed to be available in 24 exposures (at least around here) which I dislike.

I didn't even realize people liked it. I have been trying to sell off my remaining Reala stock for the longest time and nobody wants it!

Another film goes bye bye.

That said I am not too sad that its gone, I never cared for it, one of the few im sure.

I never cared for it myself, but regardless, I'm sorry for those who did like it.

I never liked it due to the weird colours I got when scanning. I much prefer superia, scans nicer.

I think Reala defined for me the Fuji film "look" (green tinted) which is nice for certain photos:

No matter, buy more Superia so we don't lose that one too.

Wait, so he's saying the medium format (I guess 120 only) is still going to be available for a while? Sweet, that's all I was really worried about. That stuff in square and 6x7 is so smooth. Sorry to those of you who love the 135 stuff, though.

One of the biggest losses for me was the above mentioned 800Z ... it was reasonably priced compared to the current 800 Portra!

Though I have heard the Portra pushes to 1600 very well ... can anyone confirm this with an example?

I found Portra 800 worked best at an effective ISO 640, never pushed it. But, I have got extremely acceptable results from Provia 400X pushed to 1600. So good in fact one of the images is on the rear cover of my book (admittedly not large, about 6" x 3.5" and any recent DSLR would give a 'smoother' picture) The down side is 400X is very expensive.

Do I miss 800Z? Hmmm don't know...I guess I probably do.

Due to all reliable (official Fuji and biggest distributors in Europe) sources I have contacted the situation is the following:

- Superia Reala 100 in 135 is indeed discontinued

- Reala 100 (it is a different emulsion) in 120 is still produced (and it is easily available here in Europe)

- Superia 200, 400, 800 and 1600 are in production, as well as 160 NS in 120

- I don't know about 160C; at least available here

Then there was a question regarding other ISO 100 films than Ektar:

- Gold 100: Higher resolution and better sharpness than Ektar 100, but coarser grain.
Reala, Pro 160NS, Pro 160C, Superia 200 all have higher resolution and better sharpness compared to Ektar 100.
Ektar only has finer grain, that's all.

And of course you can expose every ISO 160 or 200 film without any problems at ISO 100:
You will get a bit finer grain, often slightly more saturated colors and better shadow detail.
Exposure latitude of current CN films is excellent, especially concerning over exposure.

Cheers, Jan
