Fuji X10 - First Impressions

Ok..

These are "quicky" photos - I haven't read the manual but I was able to figure out how to set it to ISO3200 😀 - so.... these are all wide open - I'd like to see if I can turn down the NR in the images - they're all jpeg out of the camera - I am still on LR 2.7 so I don't think Camera Raw 5.7 will read the RAW files but we'll see 🙂 Failing that I have to suffer with *ugh* SilkyPix 🙁

These are at the highest file size so each file is about 5MB in size - BE AWARE 🙂
That last file is ISO 6400 at "half" (i.e. 6MP) this is still not using EXR mode on the camera strictly Aperture priority - the only thing lighting the dog was my computer monitor (27" Imac and 26" NEC)

Let me figure out some other stuff and then I'll get back to you guys 🙂

Ok.. guys.. try now - stupid Unix server and it's "I gotta be EXACTLY right so if you're using lowercase instead of caps then you'll always get errors" 😉

They look pretty good to me considering the sensor size. How easy did the camera get focus in the last one? Oh yea, what a sweet pup.

Pretty easily - I did not detect any hunting - then again, that auto focus assist light is on - I'm going to look into turning it off but then focusing in the "dark" (low light) will be difficult - heck, it can be difficult with an RF and I have 20/20 sight !! 🙂

Thanks. Yea,if you stress any focusing system with available darkness shooting sooner or later you can have trouble focusing for sure.

Try the same low light scene in the advanced mode....Pro Low Light setting. It takes 4 rapid photos and puts them together. Really neat. And BYW, the Contax T3 has a little more heft than this one. My favorite PS of all time and I have had many.

Just got my Gordy strap with white trim for this.

I'm going to have to go through that article but based on the "cons" that are there I honestly don't think, for me, it's that much of an issue - I'm reading through the manual and trying to get an understanding for various things.

One thing I've noted is that you can turn off the AF assist light but it also turns off a few other things (sound for example) which I would prefer if I could turn off ONLY the AF assist light - I'll test the cam's ability to focus without it, in low light, hopefully a bit later this evening.

I do agree that the "new" RAW format for each camera is a big pain in the butt.. but I am willing to live with it as I'm still using LightRoom 2.7 and PhotoShop CS3 I will have to upgrade those programs anyway at some point thanks to Adobe's jack-assery (for the lack of a better/real word) earlier this month.

The camera, for the folks like Helen who also has a GRD, is about the same length but it's slightly taller and, obviously, thicker. The build quality over the GRD feels better, to me at least. The High ISO is definitely better and the lens is only really slightly slower (f2.0 vs f1.9 - VERY slightly slower even 😀).

We'll see how it fares this weekend as I plan on using it as much as possible to determine how good it would be for just basic "out and about" shooting - as a digital "carry along" to my Leica or Rollei.

You can turn off just the AF assist light, no need to go to silent mode.
 
I've had my X10 for just a few days but thought I'd post some initial impressions now.
First, it was, and felt, smaller than I was expecting. I have large but not chubby hands and it took a little while to become comfortable with it. The upside is that it's very light and compact and will make an excellent "take-anywhere" and travel camera, which was my main reason for buying it.
Second, the menus are simple and pretty easy to navigate.
Third, I've switched the LCD off and only use the OVF. It only covers 85% but you can safely accept that you've got everything right up to the edge of the viewfinder and a little bit more for safety. I like using it that way. Much nicer than an EVF.
So far I've been using it on Auto while I get the feel of it. Some shots in EXR and some just plain vanilla auto. i'll experiment more in the next week or two. Impressions of IQ are that some of my shots are the equal of what I was getting from my m43 GF1. And some are not quite there when you look at 100% pixels. But I have to say that at 8x10 print size you'd be pressed to notice any appreciable difference. When you get to 16x20 it starts to show up.
I was reading somewhere that EXR can switch from 12MP to 6MP without you realising and that might explain why I'm seeing that some images are sharper than others. I'm going to stop using EXR to see if that makes a difference.
So far I've just shot Jpegs. They're good enough for now and I really don't want to start messing with Silkpix. I'll wait until Adobe release an upgrade to ACR for the Fuji Raw format.
I've taken some shots showing the size comparison with my M6 but it seems the option of uploading images in RFF has disappeared while they sort out their server problems so I'll have to try again later.
 
I too have had a chance to use mine and I am really impressed. The EXR mode is giving me some fantastic results without blowing out the highlights. I have it set to high dynamic range. My only beef so far is battery life but since it's my first digital i have nothing to compare to. I also found if you set the picture size to "M" you lose nothing unless you want to blow up something big. There are a few more things I like too. It has a super macro mode which can get you really close. I mean an inch or so, and if you try the intelligent digital zoom you can get 224mm equivalent! So far a real gem. Add a Gordy strap and you're in business.
 
My X10 just arrived this morning and so far only had a chance for a few shots. Not even read the manula yet so not fully sure what the camera is doing. I hada quick run throught the menus and turned things on and off to how I usually set my other cameras. Here's some of the first results. All shot in Jpeg but have been tweaked to some extent as I would when shooting RAW with my X00 and RD1, just not by as much.
