Hi, All,
Just an FYI kinda thread...
STATUS (as of 03/27/12): I received my Fujifilm Finepix X10, and many new owners are trying to overcome Fuji's UV Protection Filter/ Filter Adapter kludge. There are several forums on the web, where folks are trying to find filter protection for the X10 lens.
ISSUE: Fuji has placed an "extremely rare" thread diameter (approximately 40mm) around the X10 lens, thus requiring users to purchase a Fuji-proprietary "40 to 52mm step-up ring" Filter Adapter/ Lens Hood gizmo. This Fuji adapter then enables 52mm filters to be attached in front of the lens....while leaving vents and an air gap between the filter and lens to collect dust and detritus. (Cheaper knock-off adapters are already available.)
GOAL: To find UV Protection (or other?) filters that will adapt to the X10's filter ring, and thus not have to use the large, 52mm adapter/ hood kludge.
OPINION: What was Fuji thinking in using a nonexistent 39.5 filter thread? Did some "Brand Manager/ Marketing Genius" think this would be a clever path to more revenue? ...by forcing Fuji's loyal customer base to buy a poorly designed 40 to 52mm filter adapter/ dust magnet?
"WORKABLE" UV PROTECTION FILTERS - PRELIMINARY FINDINGS:
1. Marumi 40mm UV Filter (NOT 40.5mm) --> "Marumi 40mm UV Protection Filter for Rangefinders" is definitely the protection filter to buy. I received two Marumi 40mm UV Protection fiilters...one from 2Filter.Com and one from Real.Camera in the UK. In my opinion, 2Filter.Com is the best seller, since they are not taking advantage of the demand to gouge their customers on this 40mm. There's a bit of a wait, since 2Filiter.Com has pre-orders for every Marumi 40mm that they can get.
2. Sunpak 40.5 UV Filter --> The "Sunpak PicturesPlus 40.5 UV Filter" will screw inside the 39.5mm threadsize...and can then be tightened about one-third of a turn...which I think is enough for secure fit. I purchased three of these from a local Wolf Camera, at $12.99 each...and each attached snugly after one-third turn. Note: The "Sunpak PicturesPlus CPOL Circular Polarizer 40.5" also fits on the X10, but only for about a quarter turn to a snug fit.
3. RocketFish 40.5mm UV Filter from Best Buy - There are some forum discussions that these will fit the Fuji X10, but I purchased one at Best Buy (only $4.99) and it did NOT fit...only the slightest thread connection and it fell off.
4. Vintage Walz 40mm UV Filters - There are some forum discussions that these filters will fit the Fuji X10, but I do not have one of these to test.
5. Canon Rangefinder 40 mm Filters - Tried a vintage "Canon RF 40mm SL39 Filter#3", but it did NOT fit the Fuji X10....the threads did not mate at all.
6. "Bower" 40.5mm to 46mm Step-Up Ring - Ordered from Adorama ($6.18 via Amazon), but did NOT fit. Some forums list the Bower 40.5mm as a fit, so I am unsure the ring I received is really a Bower, since it was in Adorama brand packaging.
7. Adhesive UV Filters - There are good quality UV filters that can be attached via adhesive, but I would prefer the more secure, threaded approach.
8. ZAGG Rear Screen Protector - FYI...the "ZAGG Invisibile Shield - Canon PowerShot G11/G12" sized screen protector is also the same size to fit the Fuji X10. I have this ZAGG G11/G12 sized protector installed on my X10 rear screen.
Hope this helps folks who like to protect their $600US investment in glass,
Robt.
