Fuji X100 Manual Now Online - PDF

I only had one issue with this camera and after reading the manual I still have it. The RAW button can not be disabled. My concern is that I will accidentaly hit the button and change to jpg without noticing.

Two further comments from reading the manual:

PLUS The camera features a real-time histogram. That's nice, as it gives valuable guidance if exposure compensation is needed.

MINUS The camera does not provide overexposure signalling in the form of blinking highlights in image playback (that's a pretty basic function you'll see in just about any DSLR). That's potentially a serious shortcoming, as it makes for more guesswork to correctly 'expose to the right' (to just get enough detail in highlights so that they're not yet blown out). This was one of the reasons why I stopped using my Fuji F31fd - an annoying problem.

I seriously hope this function will be retrofitted in a future firmware update.

Arjay - check page 20 of the manual - the "Photo Information" screen for playback shows a histogram. Some folks prefer that to the flashing indicators. Better than nothing!

Well - sure that's better than nothing.

I would contend however that this rather minuscule histogram makes it somewhat difficult to accurately tell potentially blown-out highlights, and the histogram won't tell you where precisely the blown-out areas will be.

I still think the lack of a blinking overexposure warning is a weakness. I'm surprised that a camera that was designed for very good usability and IQ can actually afford to omit this function.

Also, the manual doesn't specify what type of histogram it is showing. Is this a luminance histogram, or does it represent one of the color channels (if so, which)? This type of histogram can lead a photographer seriously astray if he's shooting monochrome objects. Think of a rose in dark, full red - you'll be in serious trouble on such an object with just a luminance histogram.

I agree Fuji is silly not to offer the option for blinking overexposure signaling.

About a year ago I started to autobracket three exposures for every (non-action) shot (LUMIX G1, D200/300/700). This reduced my reliance on over-expose blinking.

I don't think we know how Fuji computes the data for the live histogram. When my X100 arrives I look forward to seeing if relying on the live histogram is practical as I plan to use 100% manual operation whenever possible. I do know, for me, the live histogram was useless on the LUMIX G1.
