I posted this in an old thread yesterday, but didn't get a response. Any help will be gratefully received.

I picked up an XE1 and 18-55 on Friday. Checked use indoors Friday night and VF was OK. Yesterday it was bright, clear and sunny and I found the EVF a bit of a challenge - the view was quite dark. Also at the long end of the lens, auto focusing on a church clock some 100 yards away showed a lot of EVF image break up outside of the focus point (a bit like pixelation.) Is this normal behaviour? I have the EVF set on max brightness and I am familiar with both the X100 and XP1. As it stands currently I will probably return the kit as it is like taking shots blind (I have set the diopter).

I have the XE2 and my viewfinder has a clear view-at night and in bright daylight. Does your XE1 has the latest Fuji-update?
 
The only time I see something like EVF pixelation is when I zoom in to verify focus using the command dial. Could you be stuck in that mode?
 
I haven't seen any similar issues with the EVF, especially not in good light; it does get a bit laggy and smears in dark conditions. My camera has the latest firmware installed - if yours does not, I'd update it and see if there's an improvement.
 
Thanks to all for your responses. I have the latest firmware etc. What I have observed is that when I press the shutter button to engage AF the image in the EVF brightens momentarily then darkens again. As it is, I can't use it, so I will return it tomorrow.
 
There my be display option in the menu that solves your problem. I would spend a few minutes with the manual before returning the camera.
 
I went through the manual cover to cover and could find nothing other than EVF brightness which made very little difference. I also did a lot of google research and couldn't find anything. Unless there is an obscure menu item or combination of items / button pushes, I give up.
 
What happens when you crank up exposure?
The latest firmware has live exposure preview.
I've had trouble with this as I often spot meter which at times can make the overall evf look dark or bright.
There is a menu option to turn this off.
It's a late firmware addition and will not be in the manual.
Just look for it in the menu.
If that's not it then who knows.

If you are shooting with the camera in manual mode there is a function called "PREVIEW EXP. IN MANUAL MODE" which will give the indications you are describing. If it's ON the viewfinder will give a realtime indication of the exposure you are about to make and when you slightly press the shutter release the viewfinder will brighten up during AF. That setting was driving me crazy when trying to use a non-Fuji flash in manual mode.

I've looked for the options mentioned, but to no avail. The live preview in manual doesn't affect AF. Thanks for all the suggestions, they are very much appreciated.
 
I've been using AE with both average a multi, but they are both the same. Exposure compensation lightens or darkens the EVF depending on +/-.
 
Only thing I can think of is to check if the depth of field preview is on. This might have been assigned to the Fn button. If DOF preview is on, the lens will stop down and the EVF will have less light to work with, so it will amplify the signal which introduces noise.

You might try putting the camera in aperture priority, and set the lens to wide open, and ISO to 200 in a daylight situation and see if the problem persists.
 
If u have a local camera store who maybe a Fuji nearby, I would suggest bringing your camera dealer there to c if they maybe able to help. Another approach is to call Fuji repair center on the east coast. Walk them thru your problem. I have found that they are very helpful the time my 27 pancake lens went bad. I walked the, thru everything I had already tried. They listened very well and agreed w/ me the lens went bad. I got a replacement lens w/In a week of sending my old one in.
