Hello,
Can anyone please tell me if I can scan an antire frame with this scanner, including the black border of the negative?

Can this be done by default of do I need to get some accessory for it?

This is for negative film.

Thanks!

Its easy to do with the V700. But AFAIK its not possible with the 5000 or V ED. The 9000 can do it.

That's an example that I scanned with the V700.

dfoo, can you please elaborate on the negative between glass method with your v700. What kind of glass, how thick, what size or any other info please.
How's the quality of scans compared to without glass?

It was an experiment actually to see if the negative was sharper next to the glass. I took two common pieces of glass from a 5x7 picture frame. One was thicker than the other. I tried:

- Negative on the bed
- Negative on the bed, glass on negative.
- Thin glass on bed, negative, thick piece.
- Thick piece, negative, thin piece.

In the scanner software I was using the document mask setting (ie: the low resolution lens). I seem to remember that the thin/negative/thick was the best. I was scanning at 4800 DPI. The quality was about the same using the high-res lens, and the negative holder.

Yes, you can. But only if you modify the film holder.

Thanks for the link on this. I have been frustrated with this since getting my 5000. You mentioned side effects - have you found an? Is flatness even worse in the filed state? Do you recommend the simpler FH... whatever holder instead? As I am now printing more with an inkjet than in the darkroom, I'm desperate!

Huh ? I see a noticeable difference scanning either directly from the scanner glass plate (and using the low-res lens) or using the film-holder (with ANR glass inserts) and the high-res lens (both at 4800 dpi) with the V700.

Chris, one side effect that I've noticed is that the scan exposure gets thrown off when too much black edge is showing. It tends to over expose and blow the highlights more than I like. Perhaps playing with the levels control in the scanner software could correct this!

Chris,

I don't think the filing I did will have much effect on flatness. I opened these up only enough to get slightly more than the image area. Haven't had any problems, but I admit, I haven't done very much scanning since I worked on these. If something comes up, I will post it. The FH3 seems to offer improved film flatness so far, so that will become my standard holder.

Cheers,
Gary

Thank you all guys,
I gave my V700 another shot with film directly on the bed and the results are slightly better, but it becomes a mess trying to make sure the bed is spotless e.t.c.
So, I'm back to wanting a dedicated scanner and so far, I got an impression that the only scanner that gives full-frame results out of the box is Nikon 9000 using the medium format holder.
Who's got over 2K to drop though, geeezzz?
