I bought a used D-300 from Cameta. The live View would not work, no matter what i did nor how many times I read the directions in the D-300 book i bought. I called Cameta. They were nice, but didn't know the cause.

Then I took off the AF lens and put on a 50/1.4 AIS. Bingo. Live View worked like a charm. Put the 35mm AF-D back on. Nothing. So then I changed the aperture control from aperture ring to the front subdial (option f7). Now, it works. Hmm. Same deal with a 28-70 3.5-4.5 AF-D.

OK. I phoned the Nikon help line. Result: one baffled help person, no answers.

Any ideas? Has anyone else seen this?

Both my D300 and D3 behave the same way. Why, I don't know. But at least you know how to get it working now.

Thanks, Jonas. Guess that's just how it is. I'm thinking maybe manual focus is the way to go when using live view. AF seems really goofy with live view. I've no idea what it's focusing on until it's too late. I did get a couple great shots of our dog today with the 50/1.4 AIS using LV.

Thought I'd take a look in the manual, which I've never cracked open, and in the section for "Customize Command Dials -> Aperture Setting" it says:

"Live view is not available when [Aperture ring] is selected and a CPU lens with an aperture ring is attached"

So... it's supposed to work this way (or *not* work, as the case may be). Still don't know *why*, especially since it works fine with a non-CPU lens...

Possibly some processor circuitry or firmware snafu they couldn't figure out. Maybe a firmware upgrade is on the way.
