No, I did not tear it down that far. I did not touch the aperture blades (other than to soak the mechanism with solvent to clean them, and work the post to exercise the U-shaped piece shown in the picture). I left the aperture assembly in the lens housing. I just removed the optics and the rear portion, as mentioned -- I left the aperture ring on the lens assembly.

OR....you have to change the orientation of the rings by a combination of rotating one in one direction and the other in the other direction.
