G owners - what's your digital choice?

A couple years back I had my G1 ... but sold it my 2nd year of college for funds 🙁

but my digital solution now is a Nikon D50 ... basically use three lenses, 50 1.8D, 85 1.8D, Sigma 30mm 1.4 EX HSM ... for the price its the most capable performer out there

My digital gear consists of the Panasonic FZ20 with it's Leica lens, but it is gathering some dust these days.
My G1 and Epson 4490 are my 30 mp digital equipment of choice!
If only they ever made a Contax GD...

There is nothing comparable to a Contax G camera as far as digital is concerned, except maybe the Canon G series, but why bother with that? Better to buy a scanner and scan your negs. . . unless you're poor like me, in which case having a digicam to fill the empty spaces between REAL photography is very financially sound.

The point of digital is ease of use and size - there is no reason for digital cameras to be huge. I bought a little Canon SD700IS, and it is quite a fun camera to have around. Very small, well designed, fast, great image quality even compared to my old Nikon D70, and it takes the best video I've seen from anything in its class. I would suggest it to anyone looking for a digicam right now. Of course, wait a couple months and the Samsung NV10 will be out, and that looks really sweet.

I sold my Canon Powershot G1 when I got the Contax G2.

My digital is a Canon D60 with Sigma 17-35 EX, Canon 24-85 USM, 24/2.8, 35/2 and 70-300.
Still haven't made up my mind what digital comes next, the D60 is still good enough for my purposes and the 5d is a bit pricey. The Epson R-D1 viewfinder doesn't support wide lenses and the Leica M8 is far too expensive for me.

I think I can wait another year or five for a new digital 🙂

Mine is usually a Canon G5. Bought it after reading Jeff Spirer's review.

Having said that I've been out this morning to a vintage car rally and took my new Fuji F30 along with my G1 and 28,45,90 lenses.
Found myself using the Fuji for detail shots of the cars and the Contax for people shots.

It's interesting the number of Canon G's that have been in the mix. I looked at the G6, which I'd read many good things about, but it seemed a little large for a pocket camera. It's hard to beat the Contax G with film and scanning, but it is nice to have another small digital to keep in a pocket for certain situations. The quest continues...

Just found this picture of me taken by a friend in November 2004. Contax and Canon go fine and the G2 is big enough to barely hide my kettle belly 🙂

Hi Joseph, that was in Havana, Cuba.

And yes, it was fun although the weather could have been better. On the other hand, that day they had the first snow at home in germany 🙂

I use a D70s for those events that require a lot of images and a fast work flow. I recently sold my D100. I find myself being drawn back to film. I think I was getting burned out on the megapixle race.:bang: I had my sights set on a D200 but it took so long for Nikon to catch up to the demand I decided to add some quality film cameras to my bag.🙄 I think I will let the manufacturers go at it until they get to the point where they can produce a camera that can compete with film in image quality and price. Besides, look at all the great film cameras that are out there now that can be had for a fraction of what they sold for new. 😀

I agree with you - the prices of some fabulous camera systems have gotten so affordable now that it's difficult to pass it up. It's hard to say if the low price of gear is driving folks back into shooting film or if it is a rebound against the process of digital - maybe both. Not saying it's a trend, but I'm observing a small phenomenon at least among my circle of acquaintances in the pro field. I'm seeing guys begin to pick up film cameras again and start to shoot for fun. This is exactly what happened to me. I love digital for client work, and other reasons but film has a magic of it's own that is timeless.

I was just having a similar conversation yesterday with a local Leica dealer - he was noticing folks who had gone digital years ago beginning to reacquire film gear similar to what they had sold. Who knows whether it is nostalgia or just for kicks, but I see it happening - just an observation...

A Canon PowerShot G5 with the Lens Mate which protects the plastic telephoto lens housing and also allows me to attach my 52mm filters.
