do i need to do something special to get the viewfinder to magnify, TIA

In one of the normal shooting modes, A, S, P, M, left click the arrow pad, and move the yellow box the where you want it (if necessary), then press centre button 'Menu/Set' which should give you a magnified view. Half press the shutter button to cancel, and then shoot.
