G1@DPReview

Great review for a great camera. I've been a Canon DSLR shooter since 2002 and own a number of their superb L zooms, but I'm really tempted now by the m4/3 system. I'll probably wait though for what Olympus might come up with and for some professional quality lenses (I know I can use Leica's with a converter).

I'm going to wait as well. I'm sure it is a good camera, in fact on Saturday I was minutes away from buying one but walked out with a Canon G10 which I must say is the best compact I have ever had.

So I'm hoping that Olympus will provide the answer, which for me is a smaller camera with a quality lens. Panasonic G1 is too big for my liking.

Finally! Much anticipated. Excellent review. Nice to see the resolution and ISO tests.

The G10 is a very nice compact, probably the best built compact, with great ergos. It's very rangefinder-like and fun to shoot, but different from the G1, especially IQ, where it pales. It's a different class of camera. The G1 has similar ergos (body), a better kit lens, has better IQ, and is comparable price-wise. With the 20/1.7 or the M-adapter the G1 won't be too much bigger than the G10.

But it looks like Olympus's u4/3 will not have EVF. Which for me and I think many others, defeats the attach of the u4/3 in that one can use so many older lenses from Leica, Canon, Zeiss and C-mount Cine lenses.

Maybe Olympus will get smart and give us true desendent of the PEN by putting the EVF on the left side of the body without a hump. I suppose it's too much to hope they would dump a pop-up flash.

Amen to the first part! Seeing Oly's concept camera, one can only hope that there's something other than a big ol' LCD back there. It is very Pen-like. However, I doubt that Oly would forgo the pop-up flash, considering the intended audience (assuming Oly is targeting the same audience as Panasonic). Most on-camera flashes are really useless.

Sounds cool. I'll buy you a beer if you bring it to the next meet.

I'll bring it if I have the u4/3 adapter AND I'll buy you a beer. I'm sure I owe you one (you've picked up many more rounds).

I think you are right - however I can't see the G1 ever fitting in my coat pocket no matter what lens is attached. I agree that the IQ is not as good, but I normally shoot at 100 ISO with a compact and the G10 is fabulously usable isn't it.

The pop-up flash on the G1 is quite good and surprisingly usable. You do have to remove the lens hood, though.

I dislike the G1 pop-up flash because it contributes to the Faux-Pentaprism look of the G1. The only pop-up flash I've ever liked is the one on the GR-DII. It has a nice switch which prevents it from ever popping up.

the 'look' of the g1 was determined by japanese focus groups, they prefered the typical slr look.

The G10 is difficult to put down. The 100 ISO is very good. Did you post images? The links appear broke.

It too bad the camera is so blinkin' ugly...You can't even turn the lights off to fix that. Hopfully they'll partner with Leica and improve the sexy factor.

Looks like it has an electronic viewfinder only :( In the Conclusion tab, Phil's review mentions that it's the best he's seen in the Pros section and then trashes it in the Cons section :bang:

There are at least two things in the Cons section that are borderline, and others that look contrived just to fill space. In fact, some of the Cons should be Pros!

That's the first thing that I looked at, and what crossed my mind at the time was "did they actually USE the thing?"

For one thing, they give a Con for having no video. Hello? It's a still camera...

Another, shutter. Instead of saying 'relatively loud' they should say 'quietest shutter of any interchangeable lens digital' and put it into the Pros section.

Third, the already-mentioned EVF. It's superb, and it's only dark if you use the slow kit lens at 45mm (90mm effective) in a dungeon. In my tests, the EVF brightens ambient at least 8x! Can any optical VF do that?

I read the G1 review and it seems like an important camera, particularly from a proof of concept point of view. But I am skipping v.01 of this. Don't get me wrong -- I love the idea of being able to strap existing M and LTM lenses to a "universal" body. But it sounds like the electronic viewfinder on the G1 is not quiiite there in low light. And the crop factor. Ahh, durn it. My hope is that this camera is a stepping stone to others, and with the relatively short product cycle in photography these days that the next version of this, a G2 or a G3 will be ready for prime time. Image quality looks good, though. Here's to product development.
