The focal length of the lens remains the same.
The G1 is more accurately described as a 'field of view halver' if that is a word.
Yes. Your 35mm street lens does not become a 70mm portrait lens. It has the FOV of a 70. It's just a crop or a mask of your 35mm FOV.
I can see where crop factors are a turn off, but I've managed with the 1.5x crop on my dSLR. Time to have some digital fun with my collection of LTM and M-mount lenses. I'll deal with all the "negatives" of a camera that's getting great reviews and has great IQ. Look at the resolution and ISO images at DPreview with the kit lens. Now think about all your quality glass cropped to the sweet spot and hacked onto the front of this camera. Folks are getting it for under $700 (camera + kit lens + adapter), while prices hold. Ugly, plastic, evf, for soccer moms, I'm all over it (especially those soccer moms!).

i think it's silly to try comparing the g1 to the m8.
the m8 was designed to be a digital range finder that uses m mount lenses. that is it's purpose in life.
the g1 was designed for soccer moms who want a better point and shoot.
and guys like me (us) got a great camera that has great kit lenses and as a bonus takes m mount lenses. so who cares if the crop factor is 2 and not 1.5?
as to plastic images and bright colours, i don't have a clue what a plastic image looks like and i shoot in black & white.
and i like the look of my pics.

Your B&W pics have great contrast, Joe.
As for the G1 being ugly, or whatever, I like that, too. I don't want someone noticing my camera. I want to be invisible. If it looks generic like some Coolpix 6000 soccer mom-cam, all the better.

I keep finding the G1 more and more attractive not only a body to hang my many M-mount and LTM lenses on but a body to use my 7 Zeiss Contrarex lenses on, play with some of the very cheap Canon FD lenses and C-mount Cine lenses like this lovely Angenieux 25/0.95.

I agree. The color shots at Flickr are impressive too!
