Hello,
Can anyone tell me how the G2 is for flash photography? What is the flash sync speed? Does it have TTL metering? Is it easy to use?
I was recently at an event that was just too dark for me to comfortably focus and shoot my leica. I was thinking that the autofocus of the G2 with a flash might have been a better solution at the time.
Normally I shoot available light with the Leica and when I want a flash I pull out the Olympus Stylus Epic. I don't really do manual controls with a flash as I've never really figured out how to shoot with one. The Oly works fine, but I was thinking a G2 might fit the bill better. More Leica-like than the Oly, but with a bit of the point and shoot of the Oly thrown in.
Anyway, please let me know if you use the G2 with flash and if so, how do you like it.
Thanks all.

Flash sync is 1/200s and with a Contax TLA flash, it will do TTL. I'd say it is very easy to use. In addition with the right flash (TLA 280 or 360) it will do second curtain sync.

The manual is available online.
Contax, Qflash, Metz and Sunpak all make TTL systems for the G2. Manual and external sensor flashes will work also. Set the camera to 'x' and shoot at 1/200, or set a shutter speed of 1/125, or slower.

Works well, does TTL with bounce (and straight, of course) flash, ... as Nikon would want it ... 1/200 sync is no slouch, either

The only missing item is automated, user-controlled "balanced fill".
The TLA140 is a great flash... small, high profile (no red eye), and TTL.
The larger flashes (TLA360) can really off-balance the G2 body.

I've used my G2/G1 with flash fairly often, it always worked pretty well, good combo for events. The smaller flashes, TLA140 and TLA200 that were specifically designed for the G system balance the best on those bodies, although you give up bounce flash. The TLA 200 is a more convenient size, uses the same batteries as the camera, has a zoom head and bit more power, but the TLA 140 sits up a bit higher on the camera, and you don't have as many issues w/ redeye. (uses a different battery though)
I used mine w/ a smaller (still BIG) metz unit on a side grip too, a little more flexible, but not nearly as discreet.
If you're thinking about getting a setup, let me know, I have a full set in the classifieds right now, but I'll break it up if I have enough interest in the individual pieces. (so far I've only heard really about the 21mm...) I even have the off-camera TTL cords for the flash...

I've used the TLA 140 in manual mode with a Nikon SC17 offshoe cord on a G1, with nice results. It's a cheaper alternative to the more expensive TLA 360, ir you want bounce flash.
