Dropping a tonne for a M
What would a good price for a G2 kit (28/45/90 and flash) be? I have seen them all over the place on the auction place and then seen them at close to halve the price else were.

One just went for $830 for all of the above and the 200 flash. Only 4 bids.
I's say anything under $1,000 for the G2 and the 3 standard lenses is a good buy.
Where is elsewhere? They are more at KEH, and more again at the local shop.

KEH has some good prices. They also have some like new/new bodies that are selling with box and all accs for around $700 which is really a good price for the fact that you are getting a new body with all papers and included accs..
eBay prices quoted above are quite accurate except I have been tracking the 90mm f2.8 closer to $175-$200 instead of $100-$150
The zoom has been getting harder to find and these usually go for $650-$675
The 21mm f2.8 with eyepiece have been going for $700-$775
TLA200 has averaged about $100 - $135
TLA-140: $35-$65
Add $100-$125 for a black body and about $50-$100 more for black lenses.
I highly doubt you can get the entire kit for $1000 or under. Atleast not one in good condition. And if they do go for less than that, it does not happen too often. So whoever got the kit with TLA200 for $830 either got very lucky or the item was not in pristine condition. Never know by looking from the outside if the body will be accurate with focus or if the lenses will be sharp.

Whatever you do, I suggest getting one with a good warranty or return policy.
The G1/G2 are technological marvels and wonderful tools -- when they work. I've had three over the years. Two of them had problems that required repair by an experienced technician. My current one just went back for repair of a problem I noted in my original request but they missed. The first problem was that film would not rewind. The second was that the manual focus wheel doesn't focus much. AF was dead on though.

That said, KEH told me a while back that they can service Contax. Also, the former service manager for Contax U.S. has set up his own shop near Atlanta, but I can't find his contact info at the moment. Someone??

Truthfully, I know I would buy the kit with the G1 instead of the G2. Make sure it has the updated electronics which is signified by the green label inside the film chamber. I have used both cameras extensively and I can honestly say I prefer the G1.
If you would like me to go into why I like it more please let me know...
With the extra $$$ saved you can buy film. processing. a trip to take some pictures on..

Hi I bought mine (secondhand) for 3 weeks ago for 1,879$ :-/ in excellent condition all in original Packaging. I bought it from a girl who never really used it.

Hey but I love it, I also own canon EOS 1vHS and powershot G7, which are very good cameras but the G2 and the CZ optics are soooooooo beautiful I only shoot SLIDES and I LOVE those colors, G2 images have the MAGICAL TOUCH which I cant explain🙂

I'm interested in your reasons as well. A couple of years ago (before I found RFF) I came across a G1 kit and my friend who was with me (also a photographer) seemed to think I should hold out for a G2, can't remember all the reasons, but I think he said the A-focus was much better on the G2.
Ended up with a Hexar AF, but might want to a a G system to my arsenal at some point :angel:

I got a black G2 with the 28/45/90 all in black with B&W filters in Austin a few weeks ago for around $1400 pre-tax. I have been looking high and low for the black and walked into Precision to buy some film and there it was. Newly traded in and no signs of ever being used. I love it. Thinking about the zoom now. Anyone have experince with it?

The viewfinder on the G2 is a little better, but not so much better that it sealed the deal. The G2 gets you an extra stop faster shutter speed, but I have not missed a shot yet wiht 1/2000th. The autofocus on the G2 may technically be more advanced, but I have not yet seen an out-of-focus portrait from my G1 with the 90mm/f2.8 - and I shoot extensively wide-open in available light (but I have not yet shot much closer than 3 feet with this lens).
My G1 is off at ToCAD getting the green sticker ROM upgrade ($45) so I can shoot the 21mm/f2.8 Biogon. I have not priced other Contax G repairs with ToCAD.

Tocad fixed a mysterious light leak on my G2- I think it came from the shutter but they never told me what they did- the only thing I didn't like about them. They were quick and the camera has been flawless since.
I had the G1 for about a year, sold it and went back to my Nikons and filled in the G niche with a TVS for about two years before I dove into the G2 kit I use now. I didn't have much luck with the G1. Focus was often out- I realized that I was somehow slipping the camera out of autofucus mode. The placement of that focus dial really didn't fit me well. Also AF in general was spotty, and I had many over-exposed slides with it. Perhaps it was my particular camera? The G2's have always been perfect focussers (?) for me in good or bad light. I rarely use the MF- could probably count on one hand the number of times so AF isn't an issue for me. I very much like the more traditional layout of controls on the G2- nearly identical to the Nikon F4S's I came to it from. I find the G2 to be a very intuitive handling camera. Nowadays I use it mostly with the 21, but have the 2nd body currently as my spring & summer 'point & shoot' with Kodachrome, the TLA200 and the 28. It is always spot on with slides and there is something pretty special about the look of Kodachrome through those Zeiss lenses.
I do wish I'd gone with the black versions- there were pics posted of one recently that was very brassed and it was quite a beautiful camera. The Titanium just doesn't seem to show anything I throw at it.
But in the end it really is the lenses as stated above- these are quite good. The 35 is the only one I've found to be less that stunning- again, perhaps this is my example? The 90 is better than my Elmarit- I just got rid of that in favor of more Zeiss glass for the M's.
I haven't shot the 16 or the zoom- just missed one on ebay a few months ago- word got out at the last few hours and it quadrupled in price. Thought I had it. I think that this lens would really make for a great travel outfit, tho a 28~70 might fit my needs a little better. I have heard good things about the zoom from some users here and there, but haven't ever compared one myself. The 16 is an intriguing one that I'd love to have- $omeday?
