G2 manual focus question

I owned a G2 (silver) previously, but sold it in an overzealous fit of cleaning film gear out of my closet. It wasn't long before I realized that was a mistake. It's a great camera with great lenses. So, I just bought another one (black). When I use the manual focus, I hear a clicking noise as I'm turning the focus dial. Everything seems to work as it should, including what's shown in the viewfinder, but I don't remember the old one making this noise. Should I be concerned? Are the black ones different from the silver ones? Thanks in advance.

Is it a regular and even click, or intermittent? Just curious. I have a silver and that focus wheel defintiely does not click.

My G1 clicks as well. The clicks sounds electronic and not mechanical.

Richard, I don't know what to say about yours not clicking.

It's a regular click, and each click coincides with a step of the focusing - if that makes sense - when you're looking in the viewfinder in mf mode, you see a series of square dots. They extend to one side of the focus point if the camera is focused past that point, to the other side if the camera is focused in front of that point. As you home in on the focus, these dots disappear one by one, and the click coincides with their disappearance. Sounds like it's normal, judging by others' experience. Maybe the question should be "why do some cameras NOT produce this sound?". I wondered if this is something that can be turned on or off, but I looked through the manual and I don't see anything about it. Maybe some G2s had this and some don't - ? Thanks to all who responded.

Well, you could say I'm a nut. I stand completely corrected. I guess I have not used it in so long that I simply forgot. I just tried again and yes, it does click! I typically only use the MF mode for when I want to set it on INF and leave it when I'm taking scenic shots through a train window or something and changed to MF and throwing it quickly to INF you hardly hear the clicks and that was what I was basing my memory upon. Sorry, it clicks!

Thanks for this thread, I could have sworn my silver G2 does not click, but it does and I also noticed that I had left the camera turned on.

Thank you steamer. I feel better now. At least my G2 was off when I first went to check it! :D

My G1 clicks as well. I think this is the step motor adjusting the finder masks for the parallax of the changed distance.

In AF that is all different, the masks just go directly to the correct parallax and not step-by-step.
