Gallery Trimming to Save Storage

I'll chime in here with those people in favor of simply limiting every individual member's gallery size. Most people have a small number of images that are their absolute favorites. A portfolio of sorts that you would pull out if someone wanted to see your work.
Give everyone room for 100 images and then let them manage their own photos.

RFF is the only place I have images for viewing on the web, because it's the members who who provide the best feedback, and you are the ones I'm trying to impress!
It's a great feeling when someone has looked through your whole gallery and comments on a photo you made a couple of years ago. The new comment brings the shot back to the front of the gallery, "freshening" the look of the page.
I really hope the concept of simply limiting each member's max number of photos is seriously considered. A lot of RFF gold will be trashed otherwise.

To the head bar tender, I'm deleting my images starting now.

12.05 pm "update", I'm now down to 50 images from 300+. I'll check back shortly and delete some more.

2.05 pm "update" I'm down to 25 images in two folders and I'll go thru those for more deletions shortly.

This is kind of cathartic, everyone should try this!

25K + users but only ~63K images?!?! not even a 1:3 ratio, so i expect that only a handful of users actually post images regularly and with any volume..

i'm with FrankS on this, cap per user limits and delete as few images as possible that currently reside on the server...

but as others have said, it's your house...

8 gig of images... impressive - 7mil pageviews most impressive

I looked at the photos I have marked as favorites. Many will be trimmed, but there are new ones every day.

Is there a way to not delete photos that are marked as favorites. That will retain pictures that are above average. And will give newer submissions something to look up to.

I understand about "your house your rule" thing, but business vs community aside, maintaining a gallery of fresh pictures without any sense of "hall-of-famers" are probably appropriate for digital/beginner/snapshots forums, but for a forum that has an "ageless, vintage, classic" feel to it, is a bit strange.

Just saying ...

I've deleted about 95 percent of my photographs here at RFF from over 300 images to 20. It's kind of cathartic. I'd suggest RFF members give it a try!

i dont think Stephen is asking for alternatives here.....

Sounds like he's decided not be in the archiving business.
There are many good ideas here, though, such as capping the amount of gallery space available to individual list users. My concern is that pictures linked to thread discussions may be lost while the threads continue to be archived.
Flicker offers a set space and limited categories for free and their "Pro" account (a laugh if ever there was one) is something like US$25 a year for either a large amount of space, or unlimited.
I think encouraging people to post their best new work and to limit the amount of older material displayed would make the forum better.
Gandy seems reasonable. I'm sure he's reading the comments.

I can tell you that all my images (likely) will be deleted from the gallery - I just don't use that feature on RFF.

I may be active in the forums but not so much in the gallery.

Flickr and my web hosting and my ability to know how to resize for web viewing seems to do just fine.. :)

I'm deleting all my images here. I never use the Gallery so I'm happy to make space for those who find it valuable.

If you wonder why the Gallery fills up so quickly, one reason could be that it takes 5 unique mouse clicks just to delete a photo that is not in a Gallery or an individual photo in a Gallery.

How singular.

It appears my post to this thread observing that the "Head Bartender" cannot make money from images has been "disappeared".

It seems even the mildest criticism is not allowed.

Bill

bill, i think people have lost sight or just can't see what is happening here, but the utter lack of respect for each other is quickly going down the tube.

I've seen your post, Joe, and am deeply disturbed by it. Using a colloquialism on an international forum to draw an arbitrary line is a recipe for confusion at best, and at worst simply fuels the fire for those who feel that moderation is being replaced by censorship. I fully appreciate that the moderators have a tough job, but there are ways to do things without making matters worse.

My original observation was factual. It's deletion inappropriate. As I have said before, I recognise that this is not a democracy, but this is getting ridiculous.

Regards,

Bill

This is the only place on the web I store my images as well and would like to keep them up. So a couple of thoughts-
•If I go to the trouble to repost them after the purge will they be allowed, or will they be denied as 'already posted'?
•With the membership now down to under 19000 from the much boasted 25000 of a couple days ago, there must be more space in the gallery... is the purge really necessary any more?

i'm sorry you see it that way bill.

time and temperment do not allow for a long drawn out negotiation process when it comes to being a censor, a moderator or a peace keeper.
we used to be a small forum and i would a p.m. to someone but i don't have enough time for that any more.
i am trying to get folks to behave in a respectful manner. there are other websites available if you feel the need to purify rff.

it's my understanding that photos can be reposted.

Well, that's nice and clear, Joe.

Far be it from me to not take the hint.

Bye.

I know that LeicaSniper brought up the fact that 8GB is not a lot of space per se.
And while that's true these days, I just realized (as part of my full time job is to deal with similar situations to what's going on here - that is, how to effectively manage business needs versus IT Infrastructure) that it may not just be the total amount of space but also how that space is broken down.

If the gallery program is set up in such a way that seems to create excessively long back up times (i.e. greater than 24 hours) then 8GB may be "too much". Put it this way, backing up one folder that has 2 files, each 4GB, takes a lot less time than backing up 1,200 folders with 10,000 files which total 8GB. Same total size but a different breakdown of that size which can create issues.

Of course, this theorem is moot if the gallery is not backed up at all :D

see my 'cheap shot' post.

joe

What cheap shot post? Did somebody else delete it?

Am I alone or have the deletions gotten to the point of craziness? I've seen references to several posts that I can't find. If these deletions are a method of getting the thread to die I think they may have another effect and have a lot of the membership dry up. I've said it before- we are mostly adults here, I find it hard to fathom that these kind of threads can be so distasteful to the masses that they must be hacked to bits before being deleted altogether.
