Canada, eh.
I had a successful Saturday morning garage sailing.

1. A pretty complete darkroom setup with 6x6 Omega Dichroic colour enlarger with Nikkor 50 f2.8 lens, trays, graduates, processing tanks and reels, safelight, etc. for $40Cdn.

2. A Canon Sureshot 105u point and shoot camera in a small Roots bag, for $2. At home I found a British 10 Pound note in a small pocket of the bag. I drove back to the garage sale to return it.

3. A mint Yashica Minimatic EL camera with 45mm f1.7 Yashinon lens, in a new-looking black leather ever ready case, for $2. The camera is jammed however: the shutter release button is in the depressed state, and the spring action that would normally push it back up is not happening. The film advance lever is blocked from operating due to the incomplete cycle of the shutter release. The camera has a programed shutter ranging from 1/15 to 1/500sec. The shutter swiches to 1/30sec when an aperture is selected manually. I will look into fixing this one, due to the lens it has.

I don't remember seeing you around for a while. Maybe I've just been blind or elsewhere.

Looks like you found a treasure's worth of stuff for pennies.

Yes, but to no avail. The control ring (used to set auto, B, and apertures) is very stiff. I'm thinking now it may be jammed badly. Oh well, $2 to practice my camera repair/destruction skills isn't too bad!

Garage sale finds

The best item I ever found at a garage sale was a Raytheon transistor radio. I believe it was the the second or third transistor radio commerically available. I ended up trading it to a collector for a 3-d Realist outfit. Best 2 bucks I ever spent.

I haven't even found anything at flea markets. The thrift store in my neighborhood usually has a few cameras but they want way too much. A Yashica "J" for $50 or an Agfa Karat 36(not in great cosmetic shape) for $75 and these are the prices after they've been reduced. No wonder they've been there for so long. 🙄

A local village organised garage sales as a fund raiser for the community last weekend, they had 22 on the same day all on a 25% share to the village fund basis. Village hall laid on coffee and cakes etc. It was a big sucess but all the good stuff was cleaned up by traders who were knocking on doors at 7:30 am (sales started at 10:00

We did come back with a load of games for the grandchildren though.

Yeah, I never find anything at garage sales. Every time I stop at one, I have my fingers crossed for a nice 8x10 camera and a tripod. Never seen one. Not ever. 🙁

Ok, I just realised I did once get a good deal: two Lowel Tota lights with spare bulbs and a big photojournalist-style bag for $40; they go for something like $100 each new. Everything was well-used, but functional.

I asked the guy why he was selling them (thinking maybe they were defective, or poor quality, etc). His answer? "I went digital, so I don't need these any more." 😕 🙄

Frank: What a find for you! I was just discussing your find with my wife, who is watching a TV show on cleaning up your garage and other rooms. What some people find valuable and worth keeping, many others throw away to make room for new furniture and things.

It is good to see you back here.

Picked up a Kyocera Samurai this weekend for $10, they wanted $5. Never seen anything like it - an autofocus zoom lensed half-frame SLR. Can't wait to fill up a roll with it.

We have "vrijmarkten" here, "free markets": tables - or sometimes simply blankets on the sidewalk - full of wares. The most well-known is Amsterdam's, on Queen's Day, but they take place everywhere, and everywhen.
I have never lucked onto the score-of-a-lifetime, but all my Agfa Clicks and Clacks and Isolas and Isolys were purchased at events like these, generally for a Euro or Two. And I honestly think that I may have missed, in my ignorance, a couple of amazing bargains.

But I don't believe in regrets. YET. 🙂

Just picked up a $5.00 Konica Auto S3 on Sat. Everything appears to work well so I'll put a roll through it and keep my fingers crossed.

I picked up a Leica I (A) for $25 at a second hand shop recently. It was in working condition with a few repairable issues (now being attended to). They get between about $600 and $1100 on eBay. I've found a few other interesting cameras of value over the years, but none to match this.

P.S.: Steve: I adore CameraQuest.com -- keep it up

I have posted these (Value Village threads)a few times but this is from the latest trip to one of the local Value Village stores. Canon QL 17 (not a GIII but it sure looks the same, size and features), Canon D flash, Canon Lens hood (hard plastic with grub screw to hold it on) both in Canon cases. lens caps, hood and a couple of 48mm hoya filters. Came in a big Nikon bag? Also in the bag was a king tripod. A Yashica tripod, the one for the GSN/GTN type cameras. The price was 39.99 but I got it marked down to 34.99

This year I bought a Canon AE-1 with 50mm f1.8 and working canon flash for $5.99 from our local Goodwill and at a flea market earlier this month I got a Dacora Royal folding 120 6x6 Camera with a 75mm f3.5 Enagon lens in leather case for $10.

I have been trying to stay away from garage sales, thrift stores and e-bay. Some times I just weaken and go look. I hear these faint voices saying, "Save me, save me." , and I will look and see some forlorn camera needing a new home.

I should start going to garage sales. There seem to be nice cameras and lenses just waiting to be bought ... at some hard to find garage sale somewhere in the world. Maybe it will be within my world?!
